History: Motorola DynaTAC 8000X was the first ever handheld mobile phone

Talking earlier on where would you be without your mobile phone (Read Here) we thought you should see where they were back in 1983.

1983 was the year the first ever handheld mobile phone was out on the market, the name of this mobile phone was called the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X and back then was a staggering $3,995, so you can see where technology has come and prices lowered.

The Motorola DynaTAC 8000X first received its approval from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission and become the world’s first commercial handheld mobile phone (Cell Phone to the Americans).

March 6th 1983 was the date it was made available for purchase, the demand for these handsets were immense and in high demand.

The Motorola DynaTAC 8000X featured specs that included Total Area Coverage’ let you talk for 30 minutes, 10 hours to recharge, eight hours of standby time, LED display, memory to store thirty “dialing locations and a cool size of 13 x 1.75 x 3.5 inches.

So you see how far the mobile phone industry has come.

  1. I hace two of these phones and I never really noticed how old they were. They are ugly and huge and way over priced then… But i wish they still worked… if they did they would be my cell phone instead of my Blackberry… not. 🙂
