Australia has more mobile phones than Australians

Yes, apparently the Aussies are outnumbered, and by no less that the mobile phone. Actually to be exact the figure is 21.26 million mobile handsets, an increase of 7.6% on the year before.
Of this mass of Aussie mobiles 4.5 million of them are 3G handsets, which is an increase of almost 200 percent over mid-year figures between 06 – 07, whilst during the same period fixed landline services fell off slightly from 11.26 million down to 10.92 million; this seems to be the way things are going all over the globe.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority 2006-7 communications report supplies the stats, and intimate that not for the first time penetration can achieve 100%+.
