Is Microsoft losing patent case fair? Alcatel Lucent awarded $512 million

Microsoft are not sitting happy right now which is what we are guessing due to the company getting one large bill by an American judge. Microsoft has been ordered to pay millions where the judge handed down the $368 million bill.

The judge upheld a previous court patent case which ruled against the computer giants (Microsoft), it was at the end of May that Microsoft lost a patent case against Alcatel-Lucent the telecoms company. Microsoft the giants in computing had accused Alcatel-Lucent of infringing patents business telephone network technologies. The main accusation was to four patents for the software in a system that will integrate telephones with computers for messages, calls and video conferences.

The court however threw this case out and now it is said that Marilyn Huff the US District Judge has determined that Microsoft owes a total of $512 million to Alcatel-Lucent, which also include interest on the original award. Mary Ward, Alcatel-Lucent spokeswoman said in a statement “”We had always believed we had a strong case and are pleased that the judge agreed that the jury’s thoughtful verdict was well reasoned and supported by the evidence”.

A spokesman for Microsoft has said that the company will go for court of appeal; they plan to appeal this decision and are highly confident that the damages award will not be sustained on appeal.
