O2 and Carphone Warehouse dump 12 month mobile contracts

The latest from O2 is that they have stopped offering 12 month contracts to customers across their entire range of mobile phones.

This shift from 12 month term contracts will apply to both O2 consumer channels, the O2 stores as well as The Carphone Warehouse, online and telesales, and reflects the move towards 18 month contracts within the market.

Customers however have in the past resisted signing for lengthy contracts due to how quickly mobile phones become out dated in terms of style design and features. So has this changed? Customers will still not want to sign for a lengthy period so why drop the 12 month term one has to wonder.

  1. What this means, no doubt, is that customers will now be thinking longer and harder about phones that can last the entire 18 month contract – what kind of features they will need to still hold their own in 18 months time, as well as phones that are built to last – so more demand for high-end phones that are a better long-term investment.

I think it is disgusting to force people into sticking with a 18 month contract, especially when the phones to be honest really cannot last the pace. I have been with O2 for a number of years and have only ever held a 12 month contract with them. Over the last 2 years I had a sony ericcson (both top of the range camera phones) and both have not even lasted more than 6 months of the contract without having to be returned numerous times and eventually having to be replaced with a new phone. Not impressed O2.

I agree with Chris and I think it will make people reconsider taking out a contract with them. Probably pushing more people into pay as you go options. My contract is due to end in October and I know I will be reconsidering the whole option. Not impressed O2.
