Apparently, in 2009, Chine Mobile will procure 55 million CDMA mobile phones, according to a report in the Chinese media, so that something like one handset for every person in the UK.

However, compared to the Chinese population 55 million is just a splash in the big ocean. China Mobile is pushing for mail, web and WLAN support on mobile handsets as well.

Analyst, Will Kong, from iSuppli Asia Ltd, says: “To procure 55 million CDMA phones next year sounds like a very aggressive plan and unlikely to be carried out. China Telecom is probably just saying that to give vendors confidence.”
