BlackBerry Storm: Would it be your choice?

So Research In Motion’s latest big baby is now out, the BlackBerry Storm has stormed into the stores, and considering all the net coverage it has been given there can’t be many mobile phone owner out there who haven’t heard mention of the Storm somewhere along the line.

So just how good is the BlackBerry Storm? Has the Storm received enough coverage to make the difference? The art of success in this mobile world all rests on how well a manufacturer promotes their latest handset as the all singing, all dancing, and best thing since Morse code, most wanted mobile phone available.

The reason I believe this relates back to the launch of the Apple iPhone, which was a phenomenal success, and why, mainly to the promotion Apple put into the device. Then followed the much hyped Google’s answer, the T-Mobile G1, which slipped out virtually unnoticed on its release.

So now we reach the release of the BlackBerry Storm, and I can’t help holding it up to the Apple iPhone and thinking…nope. Maybe the BlackBerry Storm has been pushed enough, maybe its “clickable” touch-screen is enough to make it sell well, but will it sell as good as the Apple iPhone, I doubt it.

Being a writer I belong to a few writing website over the net, some in England and some in the US, which gives me a large cross-section of hundreds if not thousands of people ranging from students through the ages to senior citizens. Since working for Phones Review I have gotten into the habit of asking people what mobile phone (cell phone for our American friends) they use or prefer.

The thing that sticks with me is that I would estimate 99% of those I know via the net, which is a wide ranging cross-section of the US taking in several states, and several other countries, most of these people don’t use a BlackBerry handset, and when I ask what cell/mobile phone would you like to own, can you guess the answer?

One other snippet I’ve noticed with many Americans in particular, when I mention the Android G1 they ask, “What’s that?” speaks for itself really.

So in closing, I’d like to ask our readers this question…If you were offered a choice between the BlackBerry Storm and the Apple iPhone 3G, which would you opt for?

James.

It is the service provider that makes the biggest difference for me. I would take any phone Verizon supports over an iphone. If Verizon supported both? Well I would need to hold them in my hand and actually use them side by side. As with most phones the extras are great but if it does not operate in a way that makes life easier then forget it.

the storm for sure. the iphone while nice i just believe is over-rated. it is missing many key features thati would like. plus i dont want a phone that everybody else is going after. I would agree the storm wont be as popular as the iphone…which is selling so much its passed the moto razor and i hated seeing that thing every where..hated the phone to begin with then everybody had them i really hated them.

anyway i am going for the storm i like the features i like that i dont think everybody will be running after it and i like that i wont have to have at&t to get it

Storm! The iPhone is all hype, but I agree the Storm will never sell as many units despite being the best phone on the market and pitted against a device with serious flaws.

Storm beacuse: I’m already a Verizon customer, for the Verizon network, and for its built in document editing.

But, it’s a good thing Verizon is launching this week or I would have defected to AT&T and the iPhone.

Things I don’t care about: bluetooth stereo, tactile screen. The missing WiFi is not such a big deal in the states as 3G coverage is good. At home I can pair it my computer and surf at higher speed (I think).

Let’s see Blackberry vs. Apple – Blackberry
    Verizon vs. AT&T – Verizon
Storm features vs. iPhone features – Storm

    Conclusion = Storm on Verizon.

Given that AT&T is the worst service I’ve ever had this is not even close. Apple chose that bed now they will lay in it. I am also interested in seeing the HTC/Google phone when it comes to Verizon, so I might hold out.

I own an iPod Touch which does pretty much does everything an iphone does except make calls when you have wifi access and I love it but I just preordered the blackberry storm. First of all AT&T has horrible coverage. I know because I had it. I have 2 BlackBerry Curves right now one for work and one for personal use and I love them. BlackBerry is not for work anymore!

I have experienced the Iphone and what AT&T has to offer and have to tell you I was impressed with the phone but the service from AT&T is spotty at best. In San Diego the service is not that good. I have had Verizon since they started and have never experienced a problem. I travel the US via car and my son uses the IPhone and AT&T. On a recent trip he lost service so often he stopped trying to acquire sites while moving in rural areas. He used my Treo to read news and other stuff from the Internet.

Bottom Line… Verizon is the best service available and since the IPhone is not on their service the Storm will be my next phone. Looking forward to Fridays launch.
