iPhone 4.0: What comes after 3.0 OS Firmware?

Undoubtedly the whole mobile world now knows Apple has unveiled iPhone OS 3.0, and with the new Apple iPhone software virtually every aspect of the Apple iPhone gets upgraded along with several new features.

So if iPhone OS 3.0 delivers all the stuff every iPhoner had wanted, this leaves a question as to what can happen with the Apple iPhone next, or iPhone 4.0?

Of course, Apple won’t simply stop with iPhone OS 3.0, for example iPhone 4.0 could well include video recording or a new way of delivering alerts rather than the dialog box popping up centre screen.

iPhone 4.0 could sort out Safari so it stops continually refreshing pages for no apparent reason, and maybe, just maybe Apple will allow apps to run in the background with iPhone 4.0, who knows what can happen. Or will all this come with a new Apple iPhone model?

  1. Wow… iPhone OS 3.0 is not yet out for Public Download yet and you’re talking about 4.0…

Well, what I think (or hope) gets included will be…
    – Ability to choose between Push Notifications and Background Processes (maybe you are on charge and want background processes or you’re on the road so you can choose push notifications) [this would probably take a new iphone which apparently is being rumoured]
    – Video Recording. WHY ISN’T THIS THERE ALREADY!
    – (This might also need another iPhone): The ability to create a VNC or RDP Server from your iPod so you can control it over WiFi from your computer without a jailbreak.
    – Ability to change what shows up in standby screen (for example, change the date and time view to calendar appointments, list of push notifications, etc.)
    – The ability to set different passwords for different areas of the iPhone. (like a different password to unlock, for mail, contacts, calendar, etc).
    – More pages for applications. It’s so annoying when i’m debating on which application to delete when I need a new one! (All 9 pages filled here!)

As you can see, there are still areas that can be improved upon. The iPhone is AMAZING, but like every other phone, not flawless… These aren’t even all my ideas (most of them though)… Oh yeah, MAKE IPOD TOUCH UPDATES FREE! I HATE THE FACT IM GOING TO HAVE TO PAY $10 TO UPDATE IN JUNE WHEN SOME IPHONERS ARE GETTING IT FREE!

iphone 3.0 rocks… if you are not running it then you should be. i got my UDID activated at iphone3unleashed.com they are the cheapest i have seen at $6.95. plus they had my account and UDID activated within 5 mins. i was amazed. I’m loving 3.0.

  3. Pascal R. says:

Needs folders & categories to sort those 9 pages of apps
There should only be about 3 pages of apps (For your Faves),

For everything else should have categories like Games, then have a sub category: Action and then if thats not enough you could rate your own games like songs, Wouldn’t that be cool?
I mean this is a serious flaw that needs to be fixed, noone likes looking at their mess of 9 pages of apps. When I want to show my friend an app i have to flip my finger back and forth through those 9 pages
Another thing they should add is making it easier to ORGANIZE the Iphone/Ipod Touch Apps.
    ——————————————
-Apple you people you should read this
    ——————————————
Allow us using the categories and ratings i mentioned before,
to organize Iphone/Ipod Touch Apps, and you could make it even easier if you let people edit their App Locations from
    :::::Itunes:::::::
Those are my suggestions/hopes for 3.0/4.0,
    I hope this comes out

Like someone has already mentioned, iPhone 4.0 should introduce background running apps as a choice. Push is going to be great, but Apple is already making their own custom batteries as seen in the new Macbooks so I’m sure they can create a long lasting battery for the next generation iPhone.

I’d also like to see Microsoft Office customized for mobile use (on the iPhone!) Specifically MS Word and Powerpoint but the others would be great too!

4.0 should also introduce iChat to the iPhone. Everyone is already waiting on that front facing camera so that we can Video chat with our aim contacts, it should also include yahoo so that all instant messaging becomes native and integrated.

4.0 should introduce Flash for Safari and the ability to put printer drivers on the phone to print from documents and pics from our phone

  5. Darren says:

“I’d also like to see Microsoft Office customized for mobile use (on the iPhone!) Specifically MS Word and Powerpoint but the others would be great too!” – MS would never allow Apple to have a version of MS office on an iphone…

However, there is nothing stopping them using a moblie verison of something like open office.

Iit will be at least a year before 4.0 will be released and although i love the iphone, it will really need to step up in the camera department and be able to run multiple apps if it wants to be market leader in all fields.

The new iphone 3Gs has a 3.0 megapixel camera and can record basic video, but there have been mobiles with >8.0 megapixel camera’s on the market for a long time now, so in a year or so’s time they will need something along the lines of 12.0 megapixels (with basic controls like being able to adjust the output quality, white balance etc) with a proper flash, plus the ability to record video in HD with the abilty to output it directly on a PC/TV. By the time you read this, there probably will be phones on the market that can do the above.

  6. Filip says:

Well , hopefully all the specs you have just said will be here on 3.1

Flash is already mobile in Android (HTC HERO) and the Iphone platform is older, so why not already?

Multitaking will probobly not come like the Palm Pre, but hopefully Push will evolve into something better than a popup window, maby its own tab or something..

Also more options on the main screen would be grate, like boxes where you can put all your game apps and another for your office apps..

    IPhone 4.0 coming after summer.

    1)Flash player support
2)Quick back option without going to home screen while switching between apps.
    3)File browsing and storing
4)Option to attach images, file etc from email app itself.
    5)Multiple signature options
    6)Manual rotate gesture option
7)Notes app should be more powerful word process (fonts, text size etc)
8)All Grouping of contacts for test message e.g. friend and family groups.
9)App for grouping key social networking sites(for posting universal photos, text to all social networking sites together.
    10) Auto spell check in safari browser (like mozilla) when adding text in twitter, facebook leaving comments at blog etc.
11)Build in Flash in camera for night photo shot
    12) Front facing camera for video Chat
    13) Use cover flow for using multitasking third party apps (limit to 5 apps, not to drain the battery life)
14)Thin quick time player app to run video downloaded from web.
15)Group notification alert or not attended tasks(missed MMS, SMS, PHONE, Chat message, meeting, event etc)on single screen.

    Roger,

You say OS 4.0 will include a flash AND a second camera? How is that possible in a SOFTWARE update?? What you’re talking about is hardware. And Apple isn’t making another iPhone at the end of the summer, that’s bull.

  9. Marc says:

Home screen icons should show more information, the weather icon could actually show the weather for your current location. A way to save files (some sort of file system) would also be nice.

  10. james says:

I think they should also set it so the phone doesn’t do it’s normal message alert tone when you’re on the phone having a conversation! And run apps in the background, allowing live widgets on the home screen.
A 5 megapixel camera is a must, as is a thinner version like the ipod touch.

  11. You can run Backgrounder from Cydia to allow background processes, and you can install GriP beta for iphone, which provides a sleek Mac OS X ‘prowl’ style pop up alert- can be ignored and auto-fades away instead of that boring old alert box

  12. Robbie says:

IPhone 4.0 should come in two different versions, or maybe in one version which could be switches by a toggle, so like a. iPhone 4.0 and iPhone 4.0 pro, apple tried making the phone easy to use and in the process made it lose alot of features, apple should implement backgrounder from Cydia with a different way of activating it, a task manager, which all from cydia were easy to use, sbsettings and status notifier. Grip and tlert for messages and push and have the abilty to swit h off the annoying boxes, ability to click on status notifier area on status bar to get like notification alert history, click battery icon to get alot of battery info, click on network name to change between 2g and 3g, click Wifi bars to get wifi info or network switch, slide across time to get sbsettings, maybe a watered down version, Bluetooth file sharing which would work like when someone wants to send you a file you grt a notification and if you want to send someone a file you click that button on the bottom right that says email mms and thab have a Bluetooth option, make wall paper have a lock screen section and a home screen section. Safari to download items, for instance all audio goes into the picutres app( which should be renamed media and have a pictures section, video, and audio) and video and pics respectivly, and all documents goes into notes, make note pad more powerful, flash on safari. Push should stay on since background apps aren’t always on, push should remain on but background will allow you to switch between apps temporarly or if your downloading something. More powerful notes app.section on settings called personalization where you can do themes, but that’s just last on the list, all this could be integrated with iPhones easy to use UI

  13. MichaelS says:

How about either syncing todo’s from ical with alerts or allow 3rd party apps like todo to run in the background and have alerts. Seriously the lack of proper todos is annoying me.

  14. Funky Cat says:

Finally,… it would be great when bluetooth enables file sharing. Now it will be possible to connect Apple iMac and Mac Books wireless and maybe sharing funny ringtones…
