Mobile phone cable sabotage knocks out Silicon Valley

I was sent this article by a friend I know in Gilroy. Apparently some hooligan thought it would be kind of funny to cut a fibre optic cable, which resulted in wide loss of mobile phone coverage, credit card processing failure, failing of bank security systems and most of all, loss of emergency services contact.

Silicon Valley was mostly brought to a standstill with severe problems across Santa Cruz, Santa Clara and San Benito counties according to AT&T and city staff.

AT&T posted to Twitter apologising for the outage and inconvenience and has put up a $100,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of anyone who was involved with this act of sabotage.

AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and Nextel networks where all affected by the outage along with emergency 911 calls and Internet services. AT&T has not speculated as to the reason for such vandalism.
