Mobile phone vehicle anti-theft system developed by students

According to a report over at Mobile Syrup a few bright students at the University of Saskatchewan have developed a way of immobilising your vehicle via your mobile phone if your vehicle is stolen.

Apparently these students have a prototype handset that brings both mobile text messaging and vehicle computer systems together to battle car theft.

This is how it works, should you be unlucky to find your car stolen simple grab your mobile phone and shoot off a text message to your car, the car then begins a shut-down sequence thus stopping the thieves in their tracks.

But it doesn’t end there, as the students test vehicle had onboard GPS and once the vehicle stopped the unit returns the text to let the owner know exactly where it is.
