Apparently Twitter wants to be taken over and according to an article on gawker.com, Apple is the closest to sealing a deal to purchase Twitter for a rumoured $700 million.

Apparently according to a source close to the situation Apple and Twitter are in strong negotiations and hope to unveil a deal by the 8th of June, probably announcing the deal at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference.

So what does Apple have to gain by purchasing Twitter? Apple already sells hot iPhone applications which enable the use of Twitter such as Tweetie, so could it be that Apple wants to take advantage of Web developers?

One can see that if Apple does purchase Twitter it can’t be about cash profit, so what other reason can there be for such an interest?
