Mobile Software: Microsoft Word in USA is banned

Seattle PI has reported a Texas judge has ordered Microsoft to close down all sales of their word processor in the US, they have 60 days to do so.

There was a patent dispute between Microsoft and Canadian software company i4i the caused the injunction on the topic of how Word handles XML files. i4i have had a victory over Microsoft before, back in May the company were awarded $200 million in damages as Microsoft had intentionally infringed on the same patent.

This is still being appealed and Microsoft will not stop selling Word any time in the near future because of this new injunction. When all is said and done, Microsoft will mount an appeal against any ruling and try to make it last as long as possible, and will probably result in them handing over a cash amount to end the matter.
