iPhone Maps going to next level says Apple

It looks like Apple is looking on Google Maps Navigation as a serious competitor to their iPhone and is apparently thus wanting to take the iPhone’s built in Maps application to the next level, and therefore has planed a job listing looking for an iPhone software engineer to join the Maps team according to an article over on macrumors.

The Apple job listing states… “We want to take Maps to the next level, rethink how users use Maps and change the way people find things. We want to do this in a seamless, highly interactive and enjoyable way. We’ve only just started.”

So it does look like Apple wants to challenge Google in the Maps space, and as Apple recently acquired Placebase, a mapping company that is known for differentiating themselves from Google’s gear it would appear that Apple wants to step away from depending on Google maps.

Just how different Apple wants to make iPhone maps from Google is another question, but with Google Maps Navigation spreading throughout that Android arena, Apple obviously wants to make iPhone maps more competitive.
