Palm CES 2010: Do they need hotter smartphone?

Palm is to host CES 2010 on the 7th of January 2010 at the San Palo Ballroom at the Venetian Hotel and is by invitation only and needs to be RSVP’d before the 23rd of December reports an article over on i4u.

Last year’s CES saw Palm announce their Palm Pre with much gusto and expectation, but what can Palm pull out of the hat this time round? As with the iPhone to contend with and now the upcoming Nexus One surely Palm needs to pull out something big and attention grabbing.

For all intents and purposes the Palm Pre and Palm Pixi is old news and any updates to the two smartphones simply won’t be big enough to pull attention away from the likes of the iPhone, Nexus One and Droid handsets.

Simply put, Palm needs to announce a new hotter smartphone to keep them in this ever changing mobile phone game, anything else will probably see Palm slide pack to days of old before the Palm Pre and webOS. So what is your view, does Palm need a hotter smartphone?

I disagree. For the most part the features in the various smartphones are the same. If Palm were able to add basic features to webos they can be back in the hunt if not leading. Features to add: camcorder, bluetooth file transfer, local desktop sync solution, virtual keyboard, increase app loading time, impovements to PIM functions (back to Palm OS levels) Docs2go & flash are confirmed to arrive 2Q ’10.

Most of the issues have been resolved with homebrew solutions. Unfortunately the vast majority of people don’t tinker with there phones. if these features are added in the next month or two Palm will be ok. To bad they missed the all important xmas holiday.

I would like to see a palm that is much like the blackberry in size and sleek. I would like it to have most of the same capabilities as the Pre. What Ron suggested above would be nice on the phone I have in mind except for the virtual keypad.

Palm NEEDS a new phone for 2010. The Palm Pre had an interesting and different design but it just did’t captivatte the consumers eye like the iPhone. One of the main problems was the small screen size and bulky width. But their downfall was the lack of apps. Palm needs at least all the most popular apps the iphone actually carry to survive. But their real savior would be a Palm phone that rivals the iPhone on screen size (no physical keyboard) and speed and graphics. They should dissect the new Zune and create a similar Palm phone, with great response and amazing graphics. Obviously it should have all the capabilities the iPhone has like video recorder, a better cam (4mp) and a speedy and responsive browser. They have to remember that people mostly use their smartphones to listen to music, browse the internet and their emails, connect to social networks and take photos and videos and play games. I would estimate that makes up at least 75% of the users. Lets see if they don’t mess up.

I played with the Palm Pre for two weeks and went back to my iPhone. The phone is too small, specifically the keyboard (I can type on the iPhone keyboard twice as fast). I also didn’t like the light and plasticky feel of it. It doesn’t feel like quality to me!

Then they created the Palm Pixi which is even smaller????? All the phones are becoming bigger and bigger, many obvious reasons for it. What were you thinking Palm? I wasn’t even looking at that. Blackberry has that market perfectly covered already. In any sense, a little touchscreen and a keyboard just doesn’t make any sense to me. Can you even see the cards on that little thing? I got very good eyes by the way!

I’d like to see the Palm WebOS on a big screen phone, where you can use the good web browsing and the other great features like the multi tasking cards. What a beautiful concept to waste on a small stupid phone. I just don’t get that. Can you imagine a WebOS on a 4.5 inch screen driven by SnapDragon Speed. Beautiful resolution lots of memory and many more features and apps added to what we have right now. Beautiful big onscreen keyboard. Now I am dreaming of my new phone, but until then I won’t even look at Palm anymore.

I just don’t get why I would get smaller with all this audio, picture, internet and streaming stuff we have today. Everything else as said is covered by Blackberry. You cannot be more practical then blackberry. If that is Palm’s target market, they are already dead. I would by a BB over a Pixi any day!

Anyway, I hope they come out with a nice big phone on the CES2010. I think that is their only chance to survive and not let that spectacular WebOS go to waste.

To finalize what I wanted to say:

Palm has a winner Mobile OS with a great 4G carrier. Sprint has improved a lot (Palm, don’t put your problems on sprint, your numbers wouldn’t have been better on any other carrier). They just need to take their OS and put it onto the right hardware Platform and they will be one of the main players … If they don’t get that concept, say goodbye to PALM
