Motorola Droid and HTC Eris users to download Android 2.1

Under: Motorola, Phone Software
Date: March 5th, 2010

Owners of the Motorola Droid and HTC Droid Eris have been patiently awaiting Android 2.1 to hit; well it is apparently time for Motorola Droid and HTC Droid Eris fans to rejoice because Android 2.1 is now ready according to an article over on softsailor.

Apparently Android 2.1 update is now available to download to both the Motorola Droid and HTC Droid Eris smartphones. However, they do warn that if you install the Android 2.1 update yourself you risk bricking your handset.

So basically this Android 2.1 update is a leaked version rather than an official one, which they say once the official Android 2.1 update goes OTA you won’t receive it and downgrading to Android 2.01 is slim, so if you upgrade there in no return.

The Android 2.1 update was apparently shown on video and looks to be a final version, but you could hang on a while longer for the official version to come over the air, which is expected anytime soon

This is old news. Android 2.1 is not ready for the Droid, someone just ported the software from the Nexus One to use on the Droid. So what is there to rejoice about? Not recommended.

  • Dave Donaldson

Actually, it is not a port from the Nexus One. It is lacking features like live wallpaper and such.

  • Cory

actually there is a leaked version with live wallpapers it is everything that the nexus has and some. also there is a way to get back to stock to be able to receive the OTA update, in fact it is very simple to do.

  • chad

I upgraded yesterday to 2.1, it was simple and works perfect

The updates to Droid sound great, but I think I’ll wait until the offical release is issued. If you do it early and it screws up your phone, no one will help you fix it and you’ll have an expensive paper weight.

I upgraded yesterday! Took 15 minutes, and was well worth it! Do yourself a favor and get it done! You won’t be sorry!

Could Cory contact me with how to get the updates with live wallpaper and all. Thanks

    hi chad,

any chance you’d be willing to share brief instructions, or perhaps a link to the location where you learned how to upgrade your eris to 2.1?

i’m sure there are a lot of eager people.

    thank you,

    /s

  • Kyle

Actually, I just wanted to post another comment that started with “actually.”

  • Joshua M.

Cory, please contact me about downgrading from the 2.1 leaked ROM to the stock ROM. hoovnick7@gmail.com

    thanks

I see many people updating to a rooted version and/or the leaked version of Android 2.1 for Eris. The question is what works and does not work? Are all of the quirks out of this thing yet? I am not looking to brick my phone and void Verizon support, but Verizon appears to be dragging their feet a bit and it is becoming seriously frustrating. Is the leaked version THE close to the OTA version or not?
