European HTC Hero will get Android 2.1 by end of April

It was supposed to be getting the Android update tomorrow April 16th but it seems now that that date has been put back for the European HTC Hero.

The Android 2.1 update for the European HTC Hero has been pushed back slightly and it is now expected to arrive by the end of April. It was reported that the Taiwanese company when asked about the update replied by indicating that the update will be pushed out over the air at the end of April.

This will make things easier for you and you wont have much to worry about. It is expected that this is for the European HTC Hero only but when you consider that the hardware isn’t that different we would hope that the global update wont be too far away.

HTC have commented that some of the phones in their Android line up including the Hero are due to receive an upgrade, and it is scheduled to be released starting at the end of April. The phone should be upgraded over the air. When the upgrade is ready we will notify you via our website and on various social media networks including both Facebook and Twitter.

  1. If these idiots slip up with the hero update again I will never purchase another HTC phone. The rest of the world has been enjoying Donut (1.6) since last summer, whilst the Hero has been languishing in a cupcake (1.5) misery since it was born. There is no reason why the 2.1 update should be delayed AGAIN. Unless, of course, HTC are busy removing all multi-touch features from the phone – to avoid paying even more royalties to Apple when they lose this sodding legal action.

My good will towards HTC is wearing mighty thin.

    Yours,

    Jon

  2. Wah wah wah! Stop moaning ffs spoilt gits. Its still an awesome phone with or without the upgrade. This is one of the first phones to get a software update of this type. Until now you would of HAD to go buy a new phone. I'd prefer they get it right from the moment it gets upgraded than realise they've cocked up afterwards.

Saying that, I'm still frustrated 😀

  3. HTC has to be the worst company ive ever come across for not communicating with its customers.
I shall be staying with the Android OS but not with HTC.
Don't get me wrong HTC make a very good product indeed the Hero being awarded phone/gadget of 2009.
But now they are becoming the laughing stock with all these rumours of upgrades that never happen.
I for one wont be buying your next product.

    What Paul said…

The phone hasn't even been out for a year yet. Just how quickly would you expect such a significant update on any other device?

Now people are throwing their toys out of the pram because the first ever attempt at updating a ROM on such a scale is taking a little longer than expected to sort out.

I know it's difficult but chill out guys.

Nothing to do with how long the phone has been out or what updates on other device.

Fact is Android have brought out updates 1.6 2.0 and now 2.1
Most of the apps that I’m after are on 1.6+
HTC have been talking about upgrades since 1.6 and to date have failed to offer any of the above.
The HTC Hero is out of date. FACT.

I'd remember when I had a Nokia 5600 slide phone, bloody terrible.

I agree the HTC Hero is out of date and a new lease of life will arrive with the 2.1 update.

To be honest, I look back and the 5600 starts giving me the shivers. Update will come, and I can't wait to give my phone a kick up the backside that it needs. Software update = faster HTC Hero.

I'm in software development, I know what they are trying to do with the update. It takes time, a lot of time to make the changes and then to test and retest and fix bugs.

Fingers crossed! a few more weeks 🙂
