Motorola first quarter results show profit as sales on the up

Good news for Motorola as there first quarter results have shown a profit as the sales of the Droid handset surged ahead of expectations, according to a post ealier on informationweek.com

A staggering 2.3 million units have been sold although sadly the rest of Motorola’s portfolio have slumped. We reported earlier today on the launch of the new Motorola RAZR3 series which can be read here, maybe sales across the board will pick up.

The mobile devices and the home unit have lost money but the Enterprise Mobility Solutions and also Network businesses have supplied enough profit to be able to prop up the company’s earnings.

Sales have been reported of $5 billion for the first quarter which is down 6% from the same time last year, earnings were $69 million compared to a loss of $291 million last year.

The Droid continues to be selling very well at Verizon Wireless but there is a new threat in the midst when the HTC Droid Incredible which we have reported on previously here, is expected to appear in Verizon stores. Both of the Droids are based on Google’s Android platform and both are expected to remain popular in an every growing Smartphone marketplace.
