Clearwire Might Drop WiMAX in Favour of LTE

During a financial results call, a Clearwire exec said that changes to the terms of an agreement they have with Intel opens the door for either party to get out of the agreement, an agreement which up until now has forced Clearwire to use WiMAX through to November next year.

According to the article over on gigaom, this could lead the way to Clearwire dropping WiMAX in favour of LTE although Clearwire has not announced any intension to switch.

However in answer to analysts questions, Erik E. Prusch, CFO for Cearwire stated that the overall ecosystem for 4G was converging and thus market will not see the tech wars of the past in the future, and added, Clearwire will “keep evolving as we move forward.”

WiMAX and LTE tech isn’t that much different that swapping from one to the other would incur too much expense in terms of network costs; however mobile phones that run on WiMAX such as the Sprint HTC EVO 4G the release of which may possibly be June 13th, would require replacing if Clearwire swap to LTE.
