New Qualcomm 1.2 GHz Snapdragon Smartphone Processors Now Shipping

The next generation in Snapdragon mobile phone processors, the Qualcomm 1.2 GHz Snapdragon has begun shipping. The two new modules are one for EV-DO Rev. B and the other is for HSPA+ and features two processor cores that can run up to 1.2 GHz.

According to an article over on Phone Scoop by Eric M. Zeman, the new Snapdragon processors can support 2D and 3D graphics acceleration, 1080p HD video playback, integrated GPS, support for Open GLES 2.0 and Open VG 1.1 acceleration, along with support for 24 bit WXGA 1280 x 800 displays.

Apparently Qualcomm states that the new chips also support low power modes which deliver improved battery life and expects the new Snapdragon chips to be used in smartphones and netbooks.

The executive vice president of Qualcomm and president of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies, Steve Mollenkopt has said, “Qualcomm’s first-generation Snapdragon chipsets set a new standard for advanced smartphones and smartbook devices, and our second-generation solutions are already shipping in volume. We are very excited by the innovation our customers are already showing as they begin designing products based on our dual-core MSM8260 and MSM8660 chipsets.”
