iOS Trademarked with Cisco But Apple Has Licensed

Back in January 2007 Apple was sued by Cisco for using the name iPhone as Cisco claimed they had registers “iPhone” as a trademark for their IP-enabled handsets. Now during WWDC 2010 Steve Jobs announced the new name for the iPhone OS as iOS, which apparently is also trademarked by Cisco.

However according to an article by Robert McMillan over at Infoworld, Cisco won’t be suing Apple this time as the iPhone giant has licensed the name ahead of the announcement from Cisco which trademarked iOS for their Internetwork Operating System.

Kristin carvel, a spokesperson for Cisco has said, “Cisco has agreed to license the iOS trademark to Apple for use as the name of Apple’s operating system for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, The license is for use of the trademark only and not for any technology.”

However as to what terms that licensing agreement holds, Carvell declined to comment and wasn’t forthcoming with any other info about the agreement. Apple as usual remains silent on the matter.
