HTC EVO 4G Consumer Reviews and Issues

The first 4G network enabled smartphone, the HTC EVO 4G has been available for a little while now on Sprint, and judging by our recent popularity poll, the HTC EVO 4G is a much liked device with many people opting to purchase the device over the new iPhone 4.

Apparently the HTC EVO 4G smashed Sprint’s launch day sales record which was previously held by the Palm Pre, but apparently the battery in the HTC EVO 4G kind of sucks, and now there are reports of problems with the glass separating from the body as reported (here).

So how are you finding the first 4G enabled smartphone, is the HTC EVO 4G all that it is cracked up to be, or is most of what we have heard just hype and in reality the HTC EVO 4G surfing the 4G network isn’t that great and much of the time is spent on 3G.

So what we would like our HTC EVO 4G toting readership to do is send us in their own personal reviews of the HTC EVO 4G, good or bad along with any issues you may have experience, and whether you feel the HTC EVO 4G can take on the likes of the iPhone 4 when it launches…post your reviews and issues in our comments area below…many thanks.

First I would say the the 4g network is still in launch. The 4g on the EVO isn't stating it's 4g alone but also 3g. Can't judge the phone of the network just yet. So before you jump to conclusions on the network, look at the phone itself…Anybody who wants to know the iPhone 4 will not even have the capability to be 4g so remember that. Secondly, this device can tether 8 pieces at a time! 3g or 4g. You have a choice on which memory card you want(iphone 4 is fixed so you don't have that option). I've also heard ppl say that the EVO is "like" the HD2 or the INCREDIBLE, but they're mistaken. That would be like saying the iPhone 4 is like the iPhone 3, it's not. It's better…All I'm saying is before we come to conclusions on the 4g network let it get fully capable then you can comment. Until then, you're beating the wind.

I've had the EVO since day one and none of the issues folks have mentioned. The grounding problem is idiotic! Seriously who uses their phone laying flat on a cloth couch!

No screen/glass/touch issues and also battery is fine for me and lasts all day. Sounds like Apple/Engadget trying to spread lies about the phone because they know this beats the new iphone hands down!

@Sal, i am a Blackberry person very happy with it but since the Evo 4G came out i think of switching. Friend of mine walked me through everything esterday and the phone is really amaizing everything from quality to all the apps….but there is one huge dis adventage with in 2 hr time battery drained from 97 to 62% and this kind of scared me. I mostly use the ophoen for calls and if this is the rate of power use this deffinately is a huge downfall>

If anyone can elaborate on this sure would appreciate

I am really curious how your battery power stays on all day.. My day starts around 730 am and by 3:30 -4pm the battery is dead. How often do you use your phone?

Do you have 4G in your area? If not then make sure it is turned off on the phone. We use ours for business so use is medium to heavy. We don't play games. Some web browsing as needed but not continuously. Still getting a full day's use from both phones.

I just got the EVO 5 days ago, and with medium use I too am getting my battery life rocked. Also, can't sync with my microsoft outlook email…kind of a big issue there. Seriously considering returning the phone.

Now getting 6:00am to bed time with 4G on all the time and phone still shows 50% after recent update was installed.

          2. George says:

You should set the phone up to receive copies of all email sent to your outlook acount.

Just got my first smart phone, the Sprint HTC EVO. I waited because at 58 I wanted a phone I could do email/web browsing/texting with without using reading glasses. I don't know what any critics are talking about. I've gotten no less than 15 hours before the battery life indicator goes to red. That's with set up, 4G on and lots of experimenting/learning. Sure, it's not the 2 days I got with my old Nextel phone but it covers a full work day. With a charger in the car (I haven't used yet) I should be pretty well covered.
4G coverage is good in the Portland, OR area where I live and work. It even has good signal in Gresham (East of Portland.) 3G is good as well. I was able to get a strong signal past Estacada (Portlanders know this is RURAL.)

    REVIEW Continued.
As for comparison to an Iphone don't know much about them but a good friend who's been an avid ipone user bought an EVO to compare and said the EVO beats it hands down except for using Exchange. He said the 3G is even much faster on the EVO than his iphone.

As for phone durability, the back seemed a little flimsy when I took it off but I put on a case cover as well as a Zagg screen protector so I should be good to go.

BTW, I also got one for my wife who is not technical at all. She had a blast learning the Android system and getting it all set up. We work together so I loved being able to set up a Google Calender to share. I also exported my contact list and imported it into her Google account (and phone.)

After nearly a week of ownership I have to say we are VERY happy with the phones.

the Evo is great however the only drawback is that you can get the worldwide data plan on it…don't quite understand why. can anyone explain? i travel a lot to canada so this is going to be quite expensive if there is no wifi around!

I got my Evo on launch day and cqn barely put it down. I am waiting to watch Toy Story3 while writing this. It is my first true smartphone and I love it. Do not have 4G here in San Diego but 3G is pretty darn fast. Had no issues with screen and battery does run down in about 10 hours but thats when i am usng it for about an hour constantly then set it down for 10 min then another hour etc. Love the phone cant wait till the 2.2 froyo update

I JUST GOT MY EVO PH, BUT IT REALLY WORK OUT FOR ME, THE INTERNET, THE HOTSPOT, EMAIL, "MAN" I COULD GO ON AND ON, BUT ONLY THING I LIKE ABOUT IT THAT I COULD USE ANY WHERE EVEN WHEN MY FRIEND HAS NO INTERNET AT THERE PLACE I COULD US MY EVO PH TO GET ON THE LAP TOP AND ALSO HAS 8M CAMERA "MAN" I PHONE CAME OUT WITH 5M CAMERA ITS ALRIGHT, BUT NOT CLEAR AS THE EVO PH…….

  8. I don't have an Evo (yet, waiting till Feb for 150 dollar discount), but I hear that a great way to solve the battery life problem is just buying some extra batteries. you can get 2 on Ebay for like 10 dollars. Let me know if this has worked out for anyone.
