HTC Hero Finally Gains Android 2.1

It has certainly been a long time coming but the word out there is that HTC has finally released an official Android 2.1 update for the HTC Hero smartphone in Europe, although the update is for unlocked and SIM free devices.

According to an article over on Electronista, the guys over at Cool Smartphone are reporting that the Android 2.1 update is being distributed OTA in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Netherlands and Serbia.

Apparently the file size is a substantial 79.88MB so they advise downloading over WiFi to your HTC Hero. They also warn that the update gets “stuck” at around the 75 percent mark but not to worry are after a short time it will continue.

Unfortunately though HTC still hasn’t pushed out an Android 2.1 update for the G2 Touch versions with T-Mobile and Orange, so the wait for them continues I’m afraid. Also if you haven’t received the OTA update you can grab the image file fro the HTC website.

My T-mobile G2 Touch (standard, not unlocked) asked whether I wanted to update this morning, which was a surprise. Unfortunately I didn't have access to wifi then and chose to do it later. Now I don't know how to get that option again!!! I'm in the UK.
