iPhone 4 3G Video Calling Cut Back by Fring

A few days ago we posted about Fring enabling 3G video calling on the iPhone 4, you can read that article (here) Well apparently Fring 3G video calling is extremely popular with the iPhone 4 so much so that after seeing usage statistics skyrocket Fring has decided to disable part of the feature.

According to an article by Andrew on Fonehome, usage of the Fring iPhone 4 update which enables the user to make video calls over 3G unlike Apple’s FaceTime app caused such a spike in Fring usage they have cut back to give more bandwidth to Fring-to-Fring calls.

According to a Fring blog post…“Since adding 2-way video calling on iPhone 4 yesterday we have seen another huge jump in fring video calling. As even more fringsters video call their friends on Android, Nokia and iPhones, we have seen some network ’stress’ (as the techies are telling me). So to free up capacity for more the fring-to-fring video calling, we are temporarily reducing support to 3rd —party Skype. Thanks for your patience.”

No doubt over time the spike would have sorted itself out as the sudden interest died out, but it does show that if Apple wants to stay ahead of the game with their FaceTime they need to enable video calling over 3G and not keep it restricted to WiFi.
