iPhone 4 HDR Photos Demo Video But is it Worth it?

With the new iOS 4.1 release comes HDR photos to the iPhone 4, HDR standing for “high dynamic range”, which is the reange between the lightest and darkest areas of a photo which then is supposed to look more similar to that seen by the human eye.

But is HDR photo capability really worth it? Well John Rettinger over at Technobuffalo has taken a look at HDR photo on the iPhone 4 and has made a video of the occasion, which we have for your viewing pleasure below.

HDR snaps three photos in quick succession, normal, over exposed and under exposed and then combined all three using sophisticated algorithms to deliver up the photo.

So to find out if John thinks HDR photo capability on the iPhone 4 is worth it, head on down to the three and a half minute video below, mash the play button and find out if you agree…enjoy.

Not a great demonstration. Take a photo outside. Bright sunny sky with really dark shadow areas below. That would be a better test of the High Dynamic Range possibilities. ; )

    that was a cute dog.

anyway….dude… if u wanna demo and review HDR… you gotta take pics of some location. if nothing great around you atleast something outdoors or from terrace and show it. not of your sleeping dog in your living room.

    grow up my friend.

Had already tried out HDR on my iPhone 4 using the pro hdr app. I prefer pro hdr as it allows you much more control over the exposure of the 2 pictures that are combined and it also has saturation contrast and brightness controls although the pro hdr could do with some improvement as it slows down considerably the taking of each shot

    Hdr

HDR works best when there is a huge difference between dark a d light areas in your picture.

Photos taken outdoors look much much better in HDR. I don’t mean to offend you but this is a very poor test. Try taking a picture of a sunset or a street with a lot of neon signs. That is where HDR really shines.

I liked your review. It did explain a bit about HDR and did show picture differences. You also did mention you might do more, so I don’t know why people are complaining. Appreciate the time and effort you put into this. :0)
