Sony 16.41 Megapixel 1080p Camera for Mobile Phones Next Year

If you think the Nokia N8’s 12 megapixel camera was good then Sony is going to surprise you as apparently Sony is to introduce a 16.41 megapixel camera which they call the Exmor R based CMOS sensor that will pop up in mobile phones as of next year.

According to an article over on Phandroid and by way of Gizmodo, Sony’s new 16.41 megapixel camera can shoot 1080p HD video at 30 frames per second and has back illumination to reduce image noise.

Word has it that the Sony 16.41 camera along with an 8.13 megapixel camera will become available to manufacturers as of January 2011, and it is expected that Sony will use said camera in their own products as well so we’ll probably see these popping up in Sony Ericsson smartphones.

Apparently this is the first time that “Exmor R” has been commercialised for use in mobile phones and is apparently the “smallest and thinnest” model for mobile devices.
