Android verses Symbian^3, Nokia N8 Issues: Video

The modern mobile operating systems of the times are as you probably know, the iPhone iOS, the Android OS, Symbian^3 and probably the new Microsoft Windows Phone 7 although it remains to be seen just how well WP7 will fair.

Obviously the two top operating systems currently are iOS and Android, but Nokia’s Symbian^3 has finally made an appearance on the Nokia N8 smartphone, but apparently according to Ed over on Nokia Mobile Blog, Symbian^3 isn’t all its cracked up to be and has a few issues.

Thus Ed has done a ten and a half minute comparison video between the Nokia N8 and the AT&T Samsung Captivate where he compares Symbian^3 against Android 2.1 OS. It appears that there is an issue with the Symbian^3 browser which keeps freezing and doesn’t allow scrolling or even killing the browser.

So if you are considering picking up the Symbian^3 Nokia N8 perhaps you should check out the video comparison below. Of course if you already have a Symbain^3 device and have been experience the same issues as in the video, please feel free to shout out in our comments area below.

I think your not been fair, Nokia said they are going to change the broswer on the N8 and that we should expect a new brower, so what you are saying that because only the browser is not ok the whole symbian~3 is wrong, i hink you are been naive, just one thing and the whole thing is wrong. so if toyota has acceleration problem it means all toyota cars are wrong, please be a little objective.

Browser was not ready at the time of launch. It will updated in the first firmware update. If that is the only snag then i suggest we take the reviewer with a pinch of salt.

First, let me addit that I have not watched the video as I have reached the point where iOS vs Android vs Symbian comparisons just end up frustrating me more than enlightening me. The surface is always just scratched with no in-depth comparison between the actual workings of the various operating systems. We are comparing a new kid on the block with an older, more established, far more functional OS! The new kid on the block has plenty of shortcomings but these are never discussed and all that is pointed out are the apparent shortcomings of the old boy.

“It appears that there is an issue with the Symbian^3 browser which keeps freezing and doesn’t allow scrolling or even killing the browser.”

As regards this comment, if that is the worst that the video exposes then the N8, with Symbian^3, is definitely for me! You appear to draw the conclusion that one should probably avoid the N8 because of these “issues” yet a number of options are available for browsing purposes (Opera comes to mind). Further to this it is already fairly well publicised that Nokia already has a browser update in the pipeline. Perhaps you’d do well to only right off the Symbian browser after this update.

well i own N8 and Ed needs to play with toys not smart phones, cuz he seems to be an ass as far as phones are concerned

Firstly N8's is about to get new browser, everybody knows that, so he needed to wait, if he cannot, he could use free opera mobile 10, which is better than what you see on android. Ed intentionally wanted to bring Nokia down but he only succeeded to prove him self being a jerk.

Secondly, fonts on social apps and email are preference, its personal choice what fonts you like and what you dont, for twitter peole use gravity as well, or other options too and its your own preference, if due to hidden reasons he dont like fonts, its his personal problem not general.

N8 may have some genuine issues like every handset including iphone and android, but Ed failed to picture them lol, as he was doing this video with a motive to bring Nokia down, but could only manage to make people laugh on hom 🙂

    lol

Just tried Engadget web site with my N8 and found no problems.

Agree that screen resolution could be higher but expect this in Nokia's Meego offering (replacement for n900).

Just been on default social app (facebook). Does the basics (including accessing embedded links).

Used Pixelpipe from N8 to load camera pictures. Again no problem.

I have three e-mail accounts (including Exchange) on my N8 (would be nice to have a client that merged them). Contact/Calendar sync with Exchange great. Access to sever contacts great again.

Would be nice to have a fuller screen in the default apps (dynamically active top and bottom status / button rows that appear when requested or needed) to save limited real estate.

Android does have a fancy UI but this comes at a price. That is why Android phones do not last a day of active use.

I can get almost two days of twitting, emailing, web browsing, audio/video playback etc while my friends on Android would be lucky to make it to tea time before they need a re-charge. And a functional UI (i.e. Symbian^3) is better than a blank screen 🙂

There is more to a phone than the first release of the default browser. Is the reviewer an apple/android fanboy? Quality journalism requires objectivity.

  7. Mike says:

The reviewer has every right to bag the non functioning browser on this phone, regardless of if Nokia have an update in the pipeline or the availability of 3rd party browser apps.

In the current age, for a smartphone to be released without a functioning web browser built in is a MASSIVE flaw. Imagine how much flack Apple would have copped if the browser on the iphone 4 didn't work – the tech media would absolutely crucify them, and fanboi's would be fighting about it on forums for years to come.

    1. R.s. says:

i agree. i have owned many e series nokias, had the icrap version 1.0 and dumped it 3 months later. problem with icrap4 is that every friend i call, who has it, either i get their voicemail, or their calls like 50 times.

i have not had any issues with the n8. yeah i am use to a physical keyboard the only drawback of the N8, yes the E7 is there but the camera is crap on it. now if the N9 can be a Part E7 super super thin like 7 or 8mm 🙂 and if it has a software agent that talks to me and it tells me what is going on and i can communicate it by voice…ahh i am dreaming now 🙂

  8. riddhi says:

Have an N8. Thought the browser was decent enough. It could use a few features like fitting text to page while zooming to prevent needless scrolling, but it certainly never hangs, or freezes, and plays videos off youtube’s website (both flash and non flash) like a charm.

I’m just going to use opera. I really like the N8’s battery life though, lasts me well into Day 2, inspite of regular gaming, and emailing. And by gaming, I mean NFS shift.

  9. Clint says:

@ Mike : The N8 does have a functioning browser built in! Others have confirmed that hey can happily access the websites mentioned. PICNIC perhaps?

Apple gets flak because they claim to be the best, sell phones at twice the price they should be and have users who need to be brought back to reality and down to earth.

  10. Lalit says:

I do not understand why people fight over the operating system, if the phone does what it says then why to be so concerned about the operating system. Nokia's UI is different from android's but that's the point, it has to be different if all the phones in world had same UI it would be so sad. It must be different for people to make their own choice according to their taste. Nokia has so many plus points which no one speaks about like better battery life than android or iphone, far far better camera- you do not need to carry a camera with u anymore, FM transmitter – its such a cool feature, Usb on move- another amazing feature i had never thought i would ever see a phone capable of doing this, it just eliminates the need to connect usb to computer then connect ur phone to computer. The screen size is just best on n8 any bigger it would make the phone bulky, why do u need a bigger screen on a mobile? Get a grip man, its mobile not a notebook. Scratch resistant screen and body- so many of us has scratched our mobiles by keeping keys in the same pocket, I think this scratch resistant feature is just what we all needed and what all other mobiles lack. Excellent job done Nokia but whatever you do some people will never stop moaning so let them moan and keep doing great job.

  11. AKz says:

    Pointless review.
I don't know where are you from Ed, but over here in UK, using a mobile phone in a car while driving is an offence. Everything you said seems like a stuborn kid not liking something personally. There was nothing professional in this review. I have used a galaxy S and love the android but still didn't like this review.

  12. Nagol says:

The Nokia N8 is hands down the better phone. Everything you can do on the android device you can do with the symbian 3 with better battery life. Android is the most overrated OS ever.

  13. nuspain says:

This reviewer is spot on. 90-95% of the people I read about in the web defending the Nokia n8 are from Europa. Nokia hasn't really ever tried to gain a beachead here in the states. People from Asia, Europe and the U.S. have different needs for different markets. Here in the U.S. are Cellular Telco system is INFERIOR to Europe and Asia. People over in EU and Asia have been doing better things with their cell phones for YEARS (i.e. 3g, video conferencing!!! That being said the U.S. has been spoiled with iOS and Android. We expect the OS on any cell phone to work and work the 1st time around both iOS and Android did this when they first came out.

ALL OF YOU READING THIS HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THIS PRINCIPAL OF "SMART" CELL PHONES.
THESE ARE NO LONGER CELL PHONES TODAY!!!!
THEY ARE COMPUTERS THAT CAN MAKE PHONE CALLS!!!!!

These small "computers" we call cell phones are packed with features and hardware that were in desktop and laptop computers 8-10 yrs ago!!! Makes you stop and think about the pace of technology.

I'm going to use the car and computer analogy. A car and computer are only as good as the engines and OS that "empower" them to be used. The engine/OS will MAKE OR BRAKE the relationship you have with a car or cell phone.

I've had been using Nokia for over 10yrs and I LOVE them as cell phones! Even so, the thing I hated about Nokia has always Symbian. Over time it would always tend to lock up when doing ordinary everyday tasks. NOKIA, BY FAR, BY FAR makes the best cell phones in the world but it's always had symbian hanging over their neck like an albatross, and now symbian is a chain wrapped around Nokia neck, dragging it down into deeper into the black sea.

Everyone knows that Nokia weakness has always been their their software/OS. But for the love of God this very weakness could have been avoided if they'd just adapt Android OS on their phones. I was looking forward to buying the Nokia N8 and using it here in the states b/c it's video and camera is HANDS DOWN THE BEST IN THE WORLD!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZ71M3ANv94

But once again Nokia has to use the ass backwards legacy of Symbian. Nobody makes better hardware on their cell phones than Nokia and nobody has uglier and slower OS for smart phones than Nokia.

    HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN?
HOW DOES A COMPANY LET ITSELF GET TO THIS POINT???

Now I'll hear about from Nokia apologists in Europe about Nokia's market share and how many millions of units Nokia has sold in the last 3 quarters. Yea so what? Those are cheap, low end, high volume cell phones that Nokia seems to getting all of it's revenues from BUT for how long?? The cell phone world will becoming a "smart" cell world within the next 3-5 years from. Then what???

People here in the states are rooting for Nokia but we keep scratching are head in wonder why they refuse to abandon Symbian. Even in light of Sony Ericsson and Samsung walking away from the table of the symbian foundation http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news/2010/11/symbi

If I were on the Titanic and saw a battleship sailing by I'd want to board it ASAP. Like the reviewer said in the video review "It just works." When will Nokia have an OS on a smart phone that will just work???

  14. Alan says:

Yep agree a bloody terible review!

Ok there are a few good points like small font size, but Christ give the n8 a chance, this is the first release for Symbian 3 and there will be a few bits missed out, what version is Android now on, so like how many updates has Android had already to get it where it is now!.

Give it 6 months when there have been updates to Symbian 3, and i feel it will be awsome, bloody horrible word but you know what I mean.

I have actually owned the N8 for 10 days now and I just love t, yes it has a few iffy bits, but what phone does`nt?.

It does everything I could imagine, and the camera just blows my friends away!.

I love it and am over the moon with the N8
