How Long Does iOS 4.2 Take To Download? 1013 Error Code

The new Apple iOS 4.2 is now here and waiting for you to download via iTunes, but we would love for you to answer this question of “How long does it take to download iOS 4.2?”

We would also like to know if you have tried downloading and then came up with the ‘1013 Error Code’ problem.

Apparently and according to a few of our readers they have experienced the error code of 1013, they tried to update on their iPhone 4 that has never been jailbroken or unlocked and about half way through the download process this error code popped up, the error tells them to connect it to iTunes (But they say they are already connected to iTunes), their iPhone’s are now stuck in the recovery mode and cannot do anything to get out of it not even a restore.

Please let us know how long it took you to download iOS 4.2 and if any of you encountered the 1013 Error Code’ problem. Thanks

    1. ok I brought it to the Apple store and they connected it to their Macbook and it updated fine. I asked why and they couldn't offer any explanation. Weird thing is my iPad updated fine at home right before I tried to update the iPhone…

I had this issue, but I looked in my hosts file. I had some entry for gs.apple.com (or something like that). i removed the entry, rebooted, restored and all is well.

        On Mac:
        * Open Finder
        * Hold down COMMAND + SHIFT keys and press 'G'
        * Enter "/private/etc/" in the field and press "Go"
        * Find "hosts" file in the directory
        * Drag the file to your desktop
        * Open it in text editor
        * Remove the line that has gs.apple.com entirely or put a # at the beginning of it to comment it out
        * Save the file
        * Drag it back to the /private/etc/ folder.
        * You'd need to enter your username and password to authenticate the move

        On Windows:

        * Locate the hosts file in one of the following directories:
        Windows 95/98/Me c:\windows\hosts
        Windows NT/2000/XP Pro c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
        Windows XP, Vista, 7 c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
        * Right click and click on "Open With…" and then click on "Notepad" on the list.
        * Remove the line that has gs.apple.com completely and save the file.
        This should work fine.

2 month old iPhone 4… no jailbreak .. 02 carrier official… i want a phone not a "connect to iphones" digital photo frame!.. @IFeelstupid how did you alter your host file?

  3. Steve says:

Removing the gs.apple.com line from the hosts file fixed it for me.
    In windows, it's in c:windowssystem32driversetchosts
Open the file using notepad and put a # in front of the IP address of that line.

I changed from my Intel MacBook to my first gen. iMac G5 and was able to restore it. Moved back to the MacBook and it installed my backup with no issue. I had Apple support on the phone and they had no explanation for that…

If you're on a Mac and you get this error, the following works:

    1. Go to your "Applications" folder
    2. Go to your "Utilities" folder
    3. Launch "Terminal"
    4. Type "sudo nano /etc/hosts" (without quotes) and hit return
    5. Enter your password
    6. Use the down arrow key to find the "gs.apple.com" entries. Once the cursor is in front, make sure you comment out the line(s) by entering "#" (no quotes) in front of the text
    7. Save the file by pressing CONTROL+W on the keyboard
    8. Exit the nano editor by pressing CONTROL+X on the keyboard
    9. Restore your iDevice

    1. braeson says:

Avoid the CONTROL+W. After adding the #, press CONTROL+X and it will ask you if you want to save the changes. Type Y and carry on with your restore. This worked 100% for me.

me too. New Iphone 4 just bought yesterday. Takes 50 min to download the IOS 4.2 upgrade package, but I got 1013 error code, and MY IPHONE4 STUCK IN THE RECOVERY MODE. ….WHAT…WHAT….WHAT….?????

  10. qwer says:

Guys, the funniest thing – 1013 error is about apple authentication, and if you got this I'm almost 100% sure that you have/had JB. The line in hosts file 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com directs itunes to cydia server!
(I had the same issue 🙂

  11. Sandra says:

I had error 1013, tried a few things mentioned nothing worked, whilst I was searching internet for a solution (with iphone still plugged into itunes) it suddenly started another restore on it's own, all ok now, so guys leave it plugged in until you get a prompt, mine took about an hour.

  12. Deric says:

I got this error 1013 while trying to uodate to OS4.2 & found this post by going to C:/windows/system32/drivers/etc/ on my Windows 7 64 Bit. Copy the "host" file to desktop & open the "host" file with notepad & add # at 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com (#74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com) then copy the file back to it original folder & overwrite it. Unplug then plug in back the cable. Restoring is in process. Thanks a bunch!

  13. Jacquie says:

I tried to download and update my iPhone last night, which took 3 hours, then I got an error message just when the download finished. I tried again tonight, which took 2 hours, with the same error message at the end of the download. Luckily, the error message came before it started to update my phone. I don't know whether to try again at the weekend with all of these issues. I am a hardened iPhone & iPod fan but the latest list of catastrophic issues is fast changing my perception of Apple products.

  14. Ted says:

delete the last line in the host file (74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com ) or add a single # sign in front of it (#74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com) which makes it a notation and not executable.

Host file can be found here… C:/windows/system32/drivers/etc/

  15. Larry Pitts says:

I got the 1013 error code after connecting my iPhone 4 into iTunes and running restore, when I discovered the phone would not work yesterday morning (the iphone had the screen that said connect it to iTunes). The restore process took almost 15 minutes to complete, and gets to the last step of the process, before the error code appears. Tried the restore on both my home Windows 7 64-bit system and wife's Windows 7-64 bit laptop, both running the latest version of iTunes. Failed to error code 1013 on both of them at the same step and time on each. Opened the Hosts file on both and neither had any references that were not already commented out with the "#" sign. Nothing mentioned in the Hosts file of either PC referring to "gs.apple.com". So I do not believe that rumored fix has any merit. Any other real solutions out there?
