iOS 4.2 Has Vanishing Folders Bug

If you are one of the iOS faithful you’ll probably know about the disappearing folders bug that has been plaguing the iPhone and iPod Touch, and one would have presumed Apple would have sorted that annoying bug with the release of iOS 4.2.1 for the iPad by apparently not.

According to an article over on TiPb by Georgia, after you have spent considerable time arranging your apps into neat little folders only to find that when you come back later some folders have apparently vanished and the apps placed inside return all over your home screen.

So not only does the user lose the folders their time putting the apps into the folders in the first place is also wasted and can be quite insufferable as you then have to go through the whole process yet again.

Apparently some users have experienced this issue after updating to a new version of iTunes, doing hard resets or updating the apps on-device, but it is somewhat difficult to pin down the cause. However apparently Apple Discussions member Painthead may have come up with a fix…you update all your apps, place them in folders and sync your iPhone or iPad.

So give it a try and see if it works and if it does or if it fails please let us know by posting a comment to our comments area below.

Been there and done that. Each time a new update comes out and you go through the motion of updating, the folders will disappear again. They are also disappearing when you close out the open apps in the multitasking pane below. I've called the Apple support twice about this and the suggesions to restore and hard reset did not work. They finally set me up with an appt at an Apple store but this will do no good since it is obviously a bug they are avoiding or pretending not to be aware of. I specifically asked the support technician if he was aware of more complaints like this and he said "no." Its annoying and a huge timewaster. I am NOT updating my iPhone for fear this will happen to it as well. Waiting to see if Apple acknowledges the problem and come out with a fix.

I spent hours organizing my apps into folders, but after update apps from app store, all the folders were gone, to make matter worse, the apps are now scattered randomly. This is a major bug, very disappointed by the quality of os 4.2.
