Will Verizon iPhone Kill HTC Thunderbolt Release?

At CES 2011 Show the new HTC Thunderbolt was announced and we mentioned a few things about this new smartphone and like others we would love to know if the Verizon iPhone would kill the new HTC Thunderbolt Release?

We have mentioned a few things about the new HTC Thunderbolt including its specifications and it being handled on video (See Here), on the specs side of things the HTC handset will feature a 4.3-inch WVGA display, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 8-megapixel camera with 720p video recording, HTC Sense 2.0, 1.3-megapixel front facing camera for things like Skype mobile video chat and Dolby surround sound.

Now seeing as tomorrow (Tuesday 11, January) is the day of the new Verizon iPhone announcement at the Verizon Press Conference will anyone be bothered to think about the new HTC Thunderbolt, it has been rumoured that the new Verizon iPhone will release at the end of January and we know many customers have been waiting on the Apple smartphone, which leaves us all to believe that no other new smartphone being released by Verizon will be hot of the shelve.

Looking over on HTC Pedia they say that the HTC Droid Incredible and Thunderbolt are the top-tier smartphones for Verizon’s lineup even though conditions of both phone’s launches could not be more different, the HTC Incredible was released in 2009 and its only competition was the Motorola Droid and now that the Verizon iPhone is being released is their going to be any competition at all.

Verizon have a lot of smartphones on its list including the iPhone, HTC Thunderbolt, Droid Incredible, Droid 2 Global, Samsung Fascinate, Droid Bionic, Samsung 4G LTE, Droid X, Droid Pro and the Motorola Atrix 4G.

They have a massive line-up and we would love to know what smartphone mentioned above would you choose and if the HTC Thunderbolt has no chance of shining considering the Verizon iPhone is being released, we would love to know what your views are.

  1. iPhone sales might cannibalize the Thunderbolt's initially, but most people who I've spoken with (I work in a campus IT department) are happy with Android offerings because of the open nature of the platform. The casual users will gravitate towards the iPhone, but Android will always have the more hardcore tech-types on their side.

Whoa- need to learn English, dude. Surprising that you seem to be a techie blogger, yet you have no grasp on what's important here. The obvious (only) question is whether or not the Verizon iPhone will work on LTE. If so, fierce competition, yes- and HTC will be in trouble based on how the iPhone is being positioned. If the Verizon iPhone does NOT run on LTE (as many suspect it will not), expect VERY few people to choose it over the HTC Thunderbolt, which we know is an LTE phone.

There will be Iphone lovers from At&T migrating to Verizon. However, people who already own a smartphone in Verizon, especially the ones owning Droid X already, will be unlikely to jump ship to Iphone when their contracts expire. Please remember, Iphone and Apple products in general are for less intelligent users. Verizon will be the first platform where Apple Iphone will debut amid a horde of users who have already seen/used smarter smartphones (i.e., Droid X) in Verizon shelfs and will compare Iphone against those available options. When Iphone came to At&T, there were no such comparison possible for At&t users. This will be a interesting thing to watch.

I am considering the HTC Thunderbolt. However, I will keep my options open. What I am disappointed about the HTC Thunder bolt are: Lack of HDMI port, Its not a dual core processor, but next gen snapdragons are pretty quick. I think what would help a Verizon I-phone would be a larger displayed screen, (above 4inches). The lack of 4G will obviously hurt them but not too much since 4G is not going to be widely available for a couple years. We will have to wait and see…

I had just gotten to the point where I had given up on the VZW iPhone — in fact, after using a friend's iPhone and my own iPad, I believe the Android interface is better/easier for email and a wide variety of other tasks. The iPhone is a better quality machine, I think, than any Android offering, but its limitations (3G only, smallish screen, annoying Apple-esque email operations). So, yes, the HTC Thunderbolt gets the nod. Wonder if they'll actually start selling them sometime…

I don't think that HTC has to worry with the Verizon iphone. Apple has become more of a status symbol than anything else. If read and handle an "Android" based phone it does much more than an iphone can do. The only positive on the Apple iphone is that it is a closed system and thereefore, they can be updated when there is an upgrade. Unfortunately it is not that easy with android. It all depends on the manufacturer and the carrier. Hopefully Google will soon work on this major drawback and have their operating system somewhat closed. So that everyone wull be able to update.

My contract with VZ expires the day before the Iphone comes available and in reality I am upset that I have to wait longer to get the thunderbolt. I love my wifes droid Ares and want a Droid based phone. I think I have a date with the TB later this year!

the iphone4 will not work on the lte platform, but the iphone 5 will whenever it comes out. i live in a city where verizon has had 3g for a while and at&t just got 3g about a month ago and have seen firsthand that verizons 3g is faster(droid x vs. iphone 4) when it comes to downloading web pages. with that being said i cant imagine at&t's 4g being faster than verizons lte. i think a lot of people will wait until the iphone 5 comes out before jumping ship to verizon, but from what ive seen droid phones are exponentially faster where i live. i also believe that if verizons 3g is quite faster than at&t's 3g where i live the same can be said for any city where both services still have 3g.

The "only positive about the iphone" , closed system with update capability is NOT that positive, people. Have had my iphone for two years and EVERYTIME Apple has had an update, I've suffered in some way and have had to wait until the NEXT update to fix it, then something else seizes up. I, too, am waiting for Thunderbolt. Was at CES when it was released and have been experiencing phone envy ever since. Atrix was extremely impressive, but not worth staying with AT&T to get it.
