HTC Thunderbolt Experiencing Mobile Hotspot Problems Does Yours: Video

Now that the Android 2.2 Froyo toting HTC Thunderbolt is out in the field as it were, the device seems to be experiencing a couple of problems. Firstly there’s chatter that the Thunderbolt has an issue with battery life as reported (here) and now a mobile hotspot problem has come to light.

According to an article over on Engadget, when they first reviewed the HTC Thunderbolt, on a single occasion they noticed a cycling between CDMA and LTE coverage, which rendered the mobile hotspot kind of useless as it dropped connection to tethered devices every time.

Now apparently the guys are using 2 HTC Thunderbolt units whilst at CTIA and both handsets are having the same mobile hotspot problem, and the guys have a video of this mobile hotspot problem happening, which we have for your viewing consideration below.

Apparently the guys aren’t the only one experiencing the mobile hotspot problem with the HTC Thunderbolt either as the Verizon support forums show that several others are having this issue.

So just how big an issue this hotspot problem will turn into is not too clear at the moment, so we’d like to hear from any of our readers that own an HTC Thunderbolt if you are experiencing the same problem and to what degree, by posting to our comments area below.

I live in Orlando and an experiencing the same problem. It seems to be really easy to reproduce by starting up some sort of streaming service such as youtube or netflix and then scrubbing around to different parts of the video. The Thunderbolt seems to routinely lose its data connection when its hotspot is buffering video to an external device.

Could this be a problem in the Orlando area? A friend of mine in Maryland states he hasn't been able to reproduce the effect.

I am viewing this website and streaming this video by my mobile hotspot from the thunderbolt. Im pretty sure it runs faster than my computer at home. I get great 4g signal and has not cut out yet. Im sorry you are experiencing problems, i hope mine does not get to that point.

I'm in Oklahoma City & once it's connected it doesn't drop & the speeds are awesome but it seems to be an act of congress to get it to initially work. All 3 of my pc's can pick up the initial signal but will have limited to no internet access. It's like it's picking up a router signal without a modem plugged into it. I've contacted Verizon via email & will let you know what they respond with. I left my EVO for a device that doesn't perform as well when it comes to something so standard.

I have the Thunderbolt and I live in Nashville and I dont have any of the above problems. Maybe its having those problems in non 4g markets I dont know but I have full 4g service and even when I have 2 bars of signal strength I still do NOT have any problems. I love my Thunderbolt and I think I will be good for a while now unless something happens to this one. Everybody is going to complain about something when a new phone comes out and at looking at just about every phone that has come out not one phone has been perfect without any flaws so before you purchase something go to the store and test it out and make sure it works for YOU.

Maybe there's a few bugs to work out, which is why they're offering the service for free for a few months. They don't want to deal with the hassle of handing out refunds to people with unstable connections.

I have had the same problem in Fort Myers, Florida (with 3G and 2-2 1/2 connectivity), in Atlanta (with 4G and 4 full connectivity) and in Columbus, Ohio (with 3G and 3 connectivity).
I travel frequently and have found the same problem everywhere I go.
Sometimes I can get it to work better by restarting it.
Other times if I leave it alone for an hour and come back it works great.
At this point I am convinced it is a network or software problem or a combination of the two–not the phone itself.
I am patiently awaiting a software update to fix the problem.
