Motorola Droid Bionic Release Date Delay: Verizon Problems (Update)

Is this the case of the RIP to the Motorola Droid Bionic with the latest news suggested it has been cancelled, or is a simple case of it has been delayed. This is where the confusion starts because we reported that its release date is in May.

We reported earlier that the Droid Bionic is set for release May 12, but out of nowhere it has also been said that it could be postponed in favour of the Targa. Getting a little confusing now so we thought we would look a little more into this.

If you visit Phone Arena they have two updates on their news article, one in a nutshell says that Droid Bionic has been delayed due to battery and performance problems, but their second update says that the handset is to be returned by testers because it will not be released now.

GottaBeMobile have reported that the Droid Bionic has been cancelled because there is compatibility issues with Verizon’s 4G Network and the problem lies with the dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset overheating.

Has Motorola Droid Bionic been cancelled never to go on sale or has it simply been delayed until further notice?

If you have had any problems with your Verizon smartphone overheating please do let us know, it does not matter what mobile phone it is just as long as you let us know what make and model it is. Thanks

UPDATE: We had an email Statement from Motorola re: DROID BIONIC quoting:

Hi Mark — I saw that you reported on DROID BIONIC today, so wanted to be sure you had our official statement should you be interested in updating your story. Thanks!

Motorola Mobility delivered the original DROID in 2009, an award winning device and one of the most successful smartphones launched. The company followed with the DROID X, DROID 2 Global, and DROID PRO. We believe the DROID BIONIC will have those same award winning features and will be one of the best 4G LTE devices on the market.

Motorola’s DROID BIONIC LTE smartphone, first announced at this year’s International Consumer Electronics Show, will launch this summer with Verizon Wireless. Based on compelling feedback since the show, we are incorporating several enhancements to make this an even better consumer experience. This includes expanded features, functionality and an improved form factor. Motorola Mobility and Verizon Wireless are very excited about bringing the ‘new’ DROID BIONIC to market.

I have had random restart issues due to heat on my original Droid, particularly when using GPS and Music while driving. I stopped using the windshield GPS mount to keep it out of the sun and this helped a bit, but the phone still gets very hot and still occasionally restarts. Leaving it in front of an A/C vent is the current poor-man's fix.
I was holding out on my upgrade for either the Bionic or the Targa. Looks like the decision may have been made for me.

You guys really have no clue whats going on. You are reading outdated posts from a week ago and putting it on your website like its current breaking news. Your information is not accurate with what the issue even is that is causing a delay, do you research anything before you post it or just read a blog and post it as fact???

This is just pathetic to me, a bad attempt to get views on your website. Please present some actual news next time, check your facts, make some phone calls, anything other than copying and rewording old web blogs.

Well an article did come out just now saying the release date could be 3rd quarter. Either way if it doesnt come out in May Motorola is gonna loose some customers. I was hoping for the bionic to come out in late april but that looks to be out of reach at the moment. and as time passes people will just loose interest. A lot of people ive talked to said that april is the longest they will wait.

only reason i havent got the thunderbolt is because of the lack of daul core, otherwise i would have bailed on the bionic.

this is the address of the site i saw the news article in. for anyone interested in my source for my comment. http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20110419-7110

Actually.. the Wall Street Journal has an official statement from Motorola in todays issue saying that the phone is in face being delayed until Q3.. just google "Bionic Wall Street Journal" looks like that ugly Targa is the new Bionic and the sleek Bionic we came to love is gone.. awesome.. I for one am disgusted.. I am tired of toting this P.O.S blackberry around.. thanks Verizon and Motorola… you have upset another 1 of 1000000000000000 thanks again

I'm with Bob, the only reason I haven't upgraded away from Sprint and my Evo is because I've been waiting for the Bionic which I thought would be in April sometime…if not then I'm just gonna say screw it. Wasn't to stoked for Blur anyways…

  6. Nathan says:

The Bionic you saw at CES is going come out this summer and looke completely different. It is going to be the Targa labeled the Bionic. Just wait and see!

  7. Nunya says:

At first, I was waiting for the Thunderbolt… When I first heard about the Bionic, it was listed as a June release – so all of this doesn't upset me. Reading about April releases was just a bonus.

  8. I'm a little skeptical about the Galaxy S II coming and the X2 being 4g. It's just now getting going everywhere else and last time the CDMA version came last. I just don't think we'll be seeing it that quickly.

  9. I Don't care which or how they release it but it has gotta be soon,,,, been holding out because of all the issues with the HTC thunderbolt. My current LG Voyager has seen it's better days and the hinge has been broken for over a month I dont know if it will last till mid summer LOL

I agree I have been waiting for the Bionic I have been due for an upgrade since the end of march, When I heard about delays I thought about the thunder bolt. but I want that darn dual core and Qhd screen. If it is truly going to be Q3 before release I may have to start looking @ the thunderbolt again or maybe the charge being released tomorrow

  11. jaynen says:

It's decided. Going Thunderbolt, I absolutely cannot wait any longer for this damn phone… Maybe some of the articles were right when they said this phone is way too far ahead of it's time. I doubt the Thunderbolt will be obsolete anytime soon, and if it does become so, then I'll just throw around the weight of my account to get an early upgrade; I NEVER ask VZW for anything and rarely call customer service.
