I am a current O2 customer and I will be getting an Xperia Play when my contract ends in July. However this delay does not fill me with confidence; the fact that other providers are stocking the Xperia Play, presumably because they tested and approved it, makes me believe that O2 are demanding custom firmware.

I've been victim to such dodgy practices before, custom firmware will lack key functionality, will not be properly supported by SE and you won't be able to update the firmware with subsequent SE updates. I trust SE but don't trust O2, I will not be renewing my contract and will be buying my Play elsewhere. If O2 have found valid issues then SE will address these through proper firmware updates.
