HTC Desire Gingerbread Release: Cutting Apps Debate

The Big Debate: HTC has put a message up on its Facebook page today cover the HTC Desire and its Gingerbread update.

HTC it seems like to confuse Desire smartphone owners when it comes to the new Android 2.3 Gingerbread update, yesterday we reported that HTC one day said that they could not give the update, this was down to the phone not having enough memory, and one day on they said that they can.

PhonesReview colleague Jamie, reported earlier today that HTC has finally listened to Desire owners and will be giving the Gingerbread update sometime next week, the HTC Facebook status message said “To resolve Desire’s memory issue and enable the upgrade to Gingerbread, we will cut select apps from the release. Look for status updates starting next week. We apologize for any confusion.”

It is very good of HTC to listen but we would like to ask you a simple question, which is “Are you happy that HTC is going to cut some apps, to make room for the Gingerbread update?”

What are your views about all this is the Gingerbread update that important that users will lose a few apps? Personally the HTC Desire should lose stock apps, allow customers to download them if they WANT them, and give the user the choice.

How about getting rid of HTC Sense from the phone, do most customers use it? Please let us know what you think, get the debate going in the commenting area below.

  1. The worst feature of the HTC Desire is the miniscule memory afforded to third-party apps – cutting away all the (often worthless) stock apps makes sense from a basic usability point of view.

You can get Android 2.3.4 AND a newer version of Sense if you root, plus the A2SD stuff which increases application space by upto 2 gig. Desire is sooo easy to root its ridiculous. If you root you don’t have to compromise at all. Don’t know why HTC wont include A2SD in their roms then we wouldn’t have memory issues at all and people wouldn’t need to root.

  2. I use the Desire and hate the Sense interface. It could be cut along with the flashlight, facebook, flash, compass, desk clock, footprints, friend stream, Learn More, News, News & Weather, Music, PDF Viewer, Peep, Quickoffice, Setup, Stocks, Teeter, Voice Recorder, Weather, YouTube and probably a few more applications. The thing is bloated full of crap that just gets in the way of real applications.

I agree that some apps are useless for some users. But I surely don’t want to have a Desire without an HTC Sense (especially the new one). So HTC please figure something out about that problem.
