T-Mobile G2 Android 2.3 Gingerbread OTA Update: Discussions

Yesterday was the day T-Mobile G2 mobile phone users would receive the Android 2.3 Gingerbread OTA update; please do let us know if you have your update.

The Gingerbread update has begun and will continue to rollout over the next few weeks, T-Mobile G2 owners have been promised this update for a while now so it is happy days for those that have received it.

The Over-The-Air (OTA) update to Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread) is coming in wave, not all will get the update as it will come in waves over then next few weeks. The good news is the update is now available and features: Tell HTC app, Google Books added, Notification bar colour scheme is changed to black, Colour-coded network icon and signal indicator added. Green when connected to Google servers. Grey when not connected and comes with new battery indicator, phone, and web icons.

The Android 2.3 Gingerbread update also allows pressing the power key while on a call disables the proximity sensor, many improvements have been made also and they include: Wi-Fi calling improvements, New SMS and email notification improvements, plus improvements to sending MMS from the Gallery.

You will know if you have the update because your phone will show a notification when you have received the update. If you have not received the notification you could just go into your settings then tap ‘About Phone’ and the tap ‘System Updates’.

T-Mobile has said this is very important: Do NOT call T-Mobile to receive the update before September 1. The timeline for receiving the OTA cannot be expedited. T-Mobile cannot manually push the software to customers who ask to receive it

As of August 5 you will be able to walk into a T-Mobile Store and update your T-Mobile G2, T-Mobile myTouch 4G and T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide, this is good news if you have not received the OTA update and cannot perform the USB tethered update. Lovely

If you do decide to go into the T-Mobile Store from August 5, the update can delete all the data on your mobile phone, the SD card will not lose data, you should therefore backup you data, write down the names of all the applications you will want to re-install and synchronize your contacts to Google or T-Mobile Backup. The update can take up to 30 minutes to finish and your handset will need at least 50 percent of battery life.

The Store Rep Will: Remove your personal SD card, Insert a software update SD card, Wait for the update to download and install on the device, Remove the software update SD card and then Insert your personal SD card again. Job done.

For more information please visit the T-Mobile Support page, please do let us know if you have received your Android 2.3 Gingerbread OTA update on your T-Mobile G2 mobile phone, we would love to know what country and town your are in as this helps us understand who got it first, did the update run smoothly or did you encounter problems? We would love to know what you think of the new Gingerbread update for this handset. Thanks, all comments most welcome.

  1. I read about the update on 7/27/ in the morning from a news letter. I went through settings, about phone, and looked for the update. I did not get a notice from t-mobile, but the check for software update worked. I live in Northampton,Pa. My wife has the same phone…bought form T-Mobile less than a week apart. When we got them, I would look for updates and it would tell me i have the latest software. My wife’s phone never would check. it would say (connect failed caused by authentication error). T-Mobile told us it says that because there is no upgrade avail. yet. I don’t believe them. My phone always checked then told me I had the current software.

I went online to LG and upgraded her’s to 2.3 yesterday. When you go to check on software update on mine, it shows i have the current version. Her’s still say’s connect failed caused by authentication error.

  2. I’m finding that my phone has a terrible time deciding between WiFi and Cellular data. Most of the time, the icons are grey and will often stay grey while I attempt to use a data connection. Frequently, the application will complain that I do not have a data connection. Turning off WiFi solves the problem but is an unacceptable solution.
