Verizon HTC Thunderbolt 4G Dying A Slow Death: Amazon

The title above is a little harsh, but we do believe the Verizon HTC Thunderbolt 4G is dying a slow death. The reason behind this is all down to the continuous price cuts, Amazon has dropped the price yet again and a very low one at that.

If you visit Amazon you will see yet another price cut, and this one is very low indeed, the Android 4G LTE smartphone started off with a $699.99 list price but now you can buy for ONLY $49.99, which is a staggering $650.00 (92%) saving.

If you are looking for a 4G LTE Android smartphone, is Thunderbolt is a good choice? it seems the answer would be a big fat NO seeing as the Droid Bionic, Photon 4G and many more other smartphones are releasing soon with better specs.

Today we have already had confirmation that the Motorola Droid Bionic will feature a 4.3-inch display screen and not the suspected 4.5-inch, even though the larger screen would have been nice to see we can still expect this handset also releasing on Verizon to sell very well indeed.

There are many smartphones can could end the HTC Thunderbolt, such as the Samsung Droid Charge, LG Revolution, Droid Bionic, Photon 4G and many more. The Thunderbolt for only $49.99 on contract is ridiculously getting lower and lower, which makes us believe this phone will come to an end with it being taken off the shelves with no re-stock.

The HTC Thunderbolt is still a good spec phone, such as a 4.3-inch Super LCD multi-touch display, 4G LTE, HD 720p video, 8-megapixel camera on the rear, 1.3-MP front-facing camera, Android 2.2, 8GB internal memory, microSD card slot, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 1400 mAh rechargeable battery and so much more.

Will you buy the HTC Thunderbolt for only $49.99? Or will you wait for another Android release on Verizon, such as the Droid Bionic? Amazon is also offering an activation credit of up to $35 for each smartphone, tablet, or mobile broadband device purchased with a 2-year service agreement from Verizon (Now through August 10, 2011). 1. the reason it’s dying is because the name is awful. Yep. Seriously, that’s why. It’s a fine device, but a name like “Bolt”, or something other, would have better suited it. Thunderbolt? Sounds like a bad AC/DC album.

    1. LOL why are we so surprised that the price at amazon has dropped. Amazon does this to about every phone. As for the title that the author chose? Did it so he know people will click it to read the article. A sure way to see if a phone by verizon is dying or about to get replaced is to check their price online. The price drops every time they about to replace a phone with another one. Please….stop going by amazon…lol

as someone else has said, of course the price is going to drop before the release of a new phone. The Thunderbolt is now about 5 months old, which is “getting up there” in phone years (like a dog). In my opinion, the Thunderbolt is the best verizon 4G phone out there TODAY. maybe not tomorrow when other phones get released, but TODAY, i feel it’s the best (I’m impartial to sense tho). Anyways, the price drop is actually quite fair to people who purchase right now. They are buying a phone that is a little old, and newer-nicer phones are about to be releases, so OF COURSE the thunderbolt should be reduced in price. It would be unfair if they didn’t reduce the price. In fact, what is really unfair is that they are still selling the HTC incredible currently. What i mean to say is that my sister in law just purchased the incredible (the first one, not the new inc2). She said she didn’t want to pay more for the thunderbolt or Inc2 or any of the other new shiny phones (which are really only like $100-150), but blah blah, she couldn’t afford those, so she got the Inc1 for $30, and surprise surprise, HTC isn’t going to update it to gingerbread. Basically, she has a very outdated phone from the start and she is locked in for 2 years.

So… i guess what i’m saying is, the Incredible 1 is dying if not already dead, and the thunderbolt is not dead yet, but actually quite alive.

  3. Haha $650 in savings! That is rediculous! To begin, you are quoting the retail price of the phone ($699) and then compairing it to the cost with a two year agreement ($49.99). When the Thunderbolt first rolled out onto the market the two year agreement cost was $249.99. That was 5 months ago! Now that other 4G devices have come out on the same carrier and 5 months in the cellular industry is decades in retail time, OBVIOUSLY the price goes down just like anything else! To be frank it should be free soon enough. I can guarentee 95% of the people who upgrade to a 4G phone on Verizon’s LTE network won’t use the Thunderbolt to half it’s ability. There would be NO reason why they should shell out an extra $150 to get the best of the best with all the bells and wistles when the Thunderbolt continues to go above and beyond there “neccesities” (Checking Email, Navigation, Music, Basic Web Browsing, and The Occassional YouTube Video). The only people who should spend the extra cash are the techies that will actually benifit from having more in a smartphone, anything else is a frivolous waste of money on the consumer end, but hey if people out there want to waste there money on things they will never use awesome! That just means Verizon has more of their money to upgrade their 4G network and make better devices that techies like me use =)

  4. Posting news reviews like this are contrary to common sense and using generalizations such as “there are smartphones that could end the HTC Tunderbolt, such as competing phones and lower prices.” Great way to get traffic imo.

Maybe. HTC/VZW could perform a little cpa with a Gingerbread release. Though why VZW would cannibalize Bionic sales is beyond me. If I were a marketing MBA, I would wait until the Bionic release (an d Bionic sales had peaked) before issuing Gingerbread for TB. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me if VZW reneged the implied promise of a TB Gingerbread release.

  6. I upgraded to the HTC Thunderbolt from the blackberry storm. I am very impressed in the improvements made in smartphones over the last year and a half. I only paid $250 for mine from Verizon. I would recommend this phone to everyone IF they hadn’t shoved so many marketing features down our throats. EVERY time I connect my phone to my computer, the Verizon Vcast website opens. This is one of those features that can not be removed or disabled without rooting the phone. The phone is awesome, but I like having complete control over all of my electronic devices. They should do what I want them to do when I want them to do it, nothing less. For that one reason, I give the thunderbolt a thumbs down.

  9. I hate this phone! it has been nothing but issues since I bought it and no way to return it after my two week trial. It has had software updates that did not fix, and cannot even send videos in the mode it says it can. I would not recommend it to anyone!

I have owned the thunderbolt for about 4 months now and have had nothing but problems with it. The biggest problem is my ear piece speaker is blown on it and whenever I talk on it all I here is distortion. How the hell does that happen??!! Another big problem with the phone is that it constantly sends messages to the wrong people. WTF?? Now I just noticed today that the touch screen seems to be coming apart from the body of the phone. I have never dropped this phone and always take great care of it. I am currently trying to find out where this thing is made. I am betting China.

this phone doesnt deserve the bad reviews. Ive had mine for about a week now and its performed flawlessly. NO issues like others described. Call quality is awesome, phone operates flawlessly, signal strength is good, speakers are great, only complaint is verizons preloaded bloatware. Its significantly better than the EVO shift i just got rid of.

Overall great midrange smart phone. And i agree with the people who said most people wont even use this phone too half its potential and dont need to buy the top of the line phones. This phone does it ALL!!!!! doesnt have the bests specs to date but it can do everything and does it well!!!!

    1. You have only had it a week give it time. I have had my phone since June of 2011 it worked great. I bragged I had the best phone to date. Then it bit me. I wish I would have waited and read some reviews. The tech support even suggested buying an new phone. Not to replace it but a whole new phone. kinda makes you go humm??

    2. Guest says:

Just wait until you have it for a couple months. I have owned mine since May 2011 and it was significantly the worst phone purchase I have ever made. Every negative comment that is on this message board is completely relevant and I have experienced every problem, and more, described. I should have known the first week I bought it that it was a mistake when I would try and charge the phone in my car and it would perform an infinite restart cycle.

  12. Kerning says:

This phone is by far the worst phone I have owned in my life. The only thing I can count on with this phone is dropped calls. The interface, when working well is quirky, otherwise, its crappy. The response is mind numbingly slow. The battery live renders this phone almost useless unless you shut off the 4g and simply not use it.

I cannot recommend enough for people to avoid this phone at all cost. I’ve had this phone for 18 months now and it dysfunction of it grows with each passing week. I’m not just writing this because it fails every so often. This phone’s features fail on a daily basis. I simply to not trust it for business purposes.

Do yourself and avoid this phone at all costs because it bring you nothing but aggravation.

  13. Thunderbolter says:

I’ll be honest and I had experienced a lot of problems with this phone in the past. But i found a solution to it. Root the device get rid of Verizon crap and the phone works much better, I have been running a custom ROM for months now and have no problems with it. I remember when the was Verizon’s flagship phone for 4G LTE now you can not even find it on their website.

  14. Nick says:

This phone is the worst phone I have ever owned. I’ve had it for about 16 months.  It shuts off without warning, doesn’t receive text messages half the time, doesn’t send the texts sometimes even though it said it sent, and has an incredibly short battery life.  This phone has countless bugs that make communication (i.e. text messaging and phone calls) very difficult at times.  It is a very temperamental phone and it isn’t reliable at all.  If you’re in a bind or a time-crunch, do not expect this phone to work for you.  Do not buy it, it is a waste of your money.

  15. Thomas Kindly says:

This phone sux, plain and simple. It has ruined my feelings for android. as soon as my agreement is over im going back to iphone. at least it worked. DONT BUY THIS PHONE..
This thing shuts off by itself even with a full charge.
