For the time being over in China, Nokia still commands the top slot when it comes to smartphones, however the word is over the coming months, Nokia may start to lose out to rivals as Apple and Android expand their presence in the country.

According to an article over on Apple Insider, Chinese website Digitimes is reporting that although Nokia currently enjoys 20 to 30 percent market share in China the smartphone maker is facing increasing competition for Android and Apple devices.

The China Market is expected to receive a “drastic realignment” during the 2nd half of 2011 and 1st half of 2012 as the iPhone maker is expected to add China Mobile and China Telecom to their partnership, which already includes China Unicom as we have previously heard.

According to the report, Android devices currently account for 50 percent of the smartphone market in China, with the top 3 vendors being HTC, Samsung and Motorola, and according to market research firm ZDC, amongst the top 15 “eye-catching” smartphones in China are the HTC Desire HD, HTC Desire S, the HTC Wildfire and the HTC Sensation.

Of course with Android being so strong in China, and Apple in negotiations with China Mobile China’s biggest operator, and China Telecom, the countries third largest operator, obviously other smartphone makers such as Nokia are going to suffer at some point in the game.

Personally I believe Nokia made a mistake in passing over the Android platform in favour of Windows Phone 7 but as they say if you make your bed you lay in it, so if Windows Phone doesn’t turn out to be a great success for Nokia their market share I would have though will plummet even further in the future.

However I could be wrong and Windows Phone Nokia devices once they start to surface may well drag Nokia back to their former glory, but I find it somewhat doubtful, do you agree or disagree?
