TouchPad and WebOS Smartphones Given The Elbow By HP

Well we have been reporting that the first webOS tablet out of the HP camp wasn’t doing too well in the sales department with a recent report that Best Buy had only managed to shift 25k of their 270k stock of the slate, and now it appears that HP has wised up to that and has apparently given the tablet and webOS handsets the order of the boot.

According to an article over on Ubergizmo, basically HP has found the tablet space a bit of a hard area to crack due to it being dominated by the Apple iPad and Android slates and has decided to throw in the towel.

In a press release HP announced their preliminary for Q3 of 2011 with revenue of $31.2 billion, which is slightly up from the previous years $30.7 billion and at the same time confirmed they would be discontinuing the HP TouchPad and all webOS phones.

Sop it looks like the TouchPad along with any other webOS tablet on the cards along with the HP Pre 3 and the likes are destined for the mobile bin; however no doubt HP will look at using the webOS platform elsewhere.

Here’s what HP had to say, “HP will discontinue operations for webOS devices, specifically the TouchPad and webOS phones. The devices have not met internal milestones and financial targets. HP will continue to explore options to optimize the value of webOS software going forward.”

Thus is would appear that the mobile space has now seen the last of Palm’s webOS platform, at least on tablets and phones anyway, but then Palm failed to make the operating system a success and HP should have taken the hint back then, but didn’t.

I’m not too sure just where this leaves customer who actually purchased the HP TouchPad or an webOS phone for future updates and the like but no doubt that may come to light later along the road, but for now it appears the TouchPad and any webOS phone is destined for that mobile graveyard.

HP forked over $1.2 billion to acquire Palm and webOS, and in hindsight probably wasn’t a good move and just how much HP has lost in their investment is unclear, but obviously has turned into a big disappointment for the company.

I guess Best Buy will be returning all those unwanted TouchPad slates hey have in their warehouse as quickly as possible now.

So any of our readers who have purchase the HP TouchPad or a webOS phone annoyed at HP’s decision to scrap the tablet and phones?
