BlackBerry Maker Research In Motion is expected to deliver they new smartphones running the QNX platform sometime in 2012, and it appears that RIM is looking to make those QNX smartphones more appealing to the mobile space by making them compatible with applications designed for the popular Android platform.

According to an article over on Reuters, by way of Bloomberg, three people “familiar with the plan” say that future BlackBerry smartphones with the QNX operating system will be compatible with Android and Research In Motion plans of having the QNX devices already with an Android player on launch rather than as an upgrade.

Raymond James Ltd analyst Steven Li says, “Being able to run Android apps, that’s a big plus. If you get the tonnage of Android apps and the top 50 apps through BlackBerry’s App World, that addresses many of the concerns people have about RIM’s ecosystem.”

Apparently the Android app player for the BlackBerry QNX smartphones will be the same as the Android player on the BlackBerry PlayBook but is being tweaked to suit the different size display and resolution on RIM smartphones.

In a bid to draw more attention and pull back some of their lost following Research In Motion is rebuilding their devices around the QNX platform and hopes to add more customer appealing features and thus plans on having the Android compatibility in place on launch to take advantage of the 250,000 apps available on the Android Market.

In the past, both Android and Apple’s iPhone have eaten into the BlackBerry market share bringing gloomy days to the Canadian company, something they hope to change in future by having Android compatibility on their future devices.

Whether BlackBerry QNX smartphones with the ability to run Android apps change RIM’s fortunes in future remains to be seen, but as Android offers roughly six times the apps of BlackBerry World it surely can give the BlackBerry faithful more choice.
