Steve Jobs Tried To Avoid Apple Samsung Patent Fight

As you know the Apple verses Samsung legal battle is now dragging in US carrier as they take sides in the confrontation, however apparently ex-chief of Apple, Steve Jobs tried to avoid such a confrontation back in 2010 by personally approaching Samsung on the matter.

According to an article over on Slash Gear, the guys over at the Wall Street Journal are reporting that during Apple presentation to the Australian court over the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, Richard Lutton, a senior exec at Apple claims that Steve Jobs contacted Samsung over patent concerns in 2010 and during cross examination said…

“The discussions started with contact from (Jobs), and then he wasn’t involved in meetings beyond that.”

Apparently Justice Annabelle Bennett adjourned the case until Friday and hopes to make a decision on whether to block the sales of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 next week, and Samsung who were expected to place the Android 3.2 Honeycomb slate up for sale on Friday has agreed to wait until the Justice comes to a decision.

Apparently Steve Jobs originally made the first move to defuse the patent dispute with Samsung because of Samsung being an “important supplier,” and because of the “deep relationship” between the two companies, and Jobs wanted “to give them a chance to do the right thing.”

Samsung’s attorney, David Catterns, has stated that Samsung has already decided to drop a patent covering “so called selective rejection technology,” from their devices and said, “We can live without that feature, Your Honor. I was told it was trivial.”

Apple’s attorney Steven Burley told the court “even a temporary release of the Galaxy tab 10.1 could substantially dent Apple’s market share in Australia.”

That statement from the Apple attorney seems to me to point out that Apple appears to be quite worried that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 could be quite a rival to their Apple iPad in Australia and that’s why they want it banned rather than because they see it as having copied their design and such, agree or disagree?
