iPhone 4S lags behind Samsung Galaxy S2: Outdated Truth

So the new Apple iPhone 4S was announced last night and releasing October 14th, but is it as good as the Samsung Galaxy S2 that is already out there. Is this the case of the of the iPhone 4S lags behind the SGS2?

So how does the iPhone 4S stack up to the Samsung Galaxy S2 (SII), well we have decided to put the two together as well as a few other tit-bits like the voice control to see why the iPhone 4S lags behind.

The reason we have done this comparison is all down to the Samsung Galaxy S2 being Samsung’s best selling smartphone, well up until the Nexus Prime and Galaxy S3 is released that is.

The iPhone 4S has new features granted, but are these features outdated? This is something many have said over on my Google+ page, the comments are coming in thick and fast since the iPhone 4S announcement. So let’s see how this pans out, please read on.

One comment came in via Google+ with a list of 5 features, the iPhone 4S comes with 1080p that is already on the SGS2, both smartphones have an 8-MP camera, when it comes to the processor both are very good indeed (More about this below), the camera access via the lock screen is already available on the SGS2. Now we get down to the nitty-gritty.

The iPhone 4S has the A5 dual-core processor, and the SGS2 has the ARM Cortex A9 Exynos dual-core 1.2GHz processor, would have to say this is about equal on performance and speed.

When it comes to the cameras, both smartphones has the 8-megapixel numbers, and both have 1080p HD video recording. The iPhone 4S might win this section thanks to the video stabilization and noise cancellation.

The iPhone 4S has a front VGA camera and video that gives up to 30 frames per second, the SGS2 has a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. The iPhone 4S can video call thanks to FaceTime whereas the SGS2 uses Google Talk with Video as well as help from apps such as Skype and Tango.

The SGS2 features the 16GB model only with a MicroSD card slot; total storage for the SGS2 is 48GB. The iPhone 4S features 3 versions at 16GB, 32GB and the 64GB, but does not come with a MicroSD card slot, so nothing really exciting for the iPhone 4S.

Ok so what about the display then? Well, the iPhone 4S has a 3.5-inch Retina Display featuring 960 x 640 pixel resolution at 326 ppi, on the other hand the Samsung Galaxy S II features a 4.3-inch (4.52 for the Sprint Epic 4G Touch and T-Mobile USA’s Galaxy S II) AMOLED Plus screen, with 217 ppi for the 4.3-inch screen and 206 ppi for the 4.52-inch screen (resolution of 480 x 800). The iPhone 4S has a much crisper image but unless you are a screen geek not that much difference to jump for joy for the iPhone 4S.

How does the data speed stack up: The iPhone 4S supports up to 14.4Mbps download, which is a lot faster than the current iPhone 4. However the SGS2 is HSPA+ ready and produces 21Mbps download speed, what do you favour?

The battery life on the Samsung Galaxy S II Global phone provides up to 610 hours on 3G standby time, 710 hours on 2G, as well as 8 hours 40 min on talk time on 3G and talk time of 18 hours and 20 min max on 2G and around 5 to 6 hours internet time. The iPhone 4S offers 200 hours on standby on 3G and talk time is 8 hours on 3G, 14 hours on 2G GSM, if you use the internet you can expect 9 hours max on Wi-Fi and up to 6 hours on 3G. So the SGS2 is better here.

When it comes to the voice assistants on these devices, will they really be used? If you head on over to Phandroid they have hot upon this subject, the iPhone 4S will come fitted with the new voice recognition service aka Siri, which will release on other iPhones with iOS 5.

But Phandroid asked its readers if anyone really uses it by asking this question “How Often Do You Use Voice Actions On Android?” the results were very interesting indeed, here are the stats on their poll: Frequently 20.13% (653 votes), Rarely 33.23% (1,078 votes), Never 29.59% (960 votes), Only While Driving 13.1% (425 votes), and Only if it performed like Siri 3.95% (128 votes).

So if Android users out there rarely use the voice assistant, will iOS users use the Siri service or will it be a novelty?

Phones Review, The Bottom Line: We will say it how it is, so please do not come knocking on our door with pick axes (Lol). We use both iOS and Android devices, but and a big BUT is the fact that Apple’s software and hardware work very well together, Android devices cannot compete with the way Apple products talk with each other.

There are a few changes with the new iPhone 4S, but trust us when we say, “We did not fall of our chair with amazement”, we will still get one though just to review it. When you look at the comparison between the two handsets about there is not much difference in features, so this stands to reason that the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Samsung Nexus Prime will be the phones to have.

When Apple says the iPhone 4S has new features, they are telling you the truth because it does, but when you compare the iPhone 4S features with other phones such as the SGS2, you have to admit that the features are not new as an overall.

Please do get you comments in, really looking forward to seeing what you have to say about the above comparison. Thanks

Agreed they do work well together, but for that you need to buy more than one overpriced product… and after having ipod touch 2,3 and 4 i know that they do not talk well to other devices though, it has bluetooth… but all i can do with it is sent my contacts over or mabey a pic? i dont know i didnt risk it… Where android devices can send anything you like to another phone, pc/laptop without having to jailbreak (root) it… APPLE ARE CONTROLL FREAKS!!!! DONT BECOME A ZOMBIE!!!

I think he was talking about the software and hardware in the individual devices, and he’s right.  I’m a big Android fan and user, but nobody who has actually compared the two can deny that iPhones get more out of their hardware, even if the specs aren’t as good.  Even the iPhone 4 loads heavy graphic games and apps faster than the SGS II.  I’m hoping that Ice Cream Sandwich comes with some serious software customization.  If iPhone can get what they do out of their hardware, just think of what Android can do if their software is optimized the same way, because Android’s OEMs have already been using better hardware than that on the iPhone 4s for months.

  2. I agree with most of your comparison, but you left out a major reason I purchased the Galaxy S2 on Sunday: the display. You only covered resolution, but Samsung knows there is a LOT more to a display than simple resolution. If you put the two devices side by side you’ll notice that the iPhone looks drab and grey. That’s because the Super AMOLED display by Samsung makes colors POP. iPhone has an LCD screen with a backlight. SAMOLED actually powers pixels independently, so when a pixel is black it’s a true black. When pixel’s are colored they’re a true color instead of lit by a separate source. True colors, True blacks. MUCH better display.

    Siri service is a novelty?

It is authors like you who said iPad is just another “Big Ipod Touch” about a year back and look at the tablet market now.

Even Sammy wants a piece of the cake but failed miserably.

You journalists just never learn do you?

I think I will get a Samsung Galaxy S2 after all…tired of all the waiting and false rumors and eventual disappointment and walled garden and iTunes bottleneck and overpriced everything from Apple. When they come out with the 5 I might switch back, but this was not an upgrade…it was Lord of the Rings Theatrical Edition on VHS then Lord of the Rings Extended Edition on VHS then Lord of the Rings Theatrical Edition on DVD then Lord of the Rings Extended Edition on DVD then Lord of the Rings Theatrical Edition on Blu-Ray then Lord of the Rings Extended Edition on Blu-Ray. They just want to make a buck and bide their time. Cruel little Hobbitses.

I agree with this assessment. I’m still sporting a Nexus S 4g with Sprint. I know how well both work and I can tell you that they both have their strengths and weaknesses. I’ll keep my Nexus S 4G on Sprint, but I will actually spring for the 4S on my AT&T account to replace my old iPod.

I have both an iPhone 4 and the Galaxy S2 and the battery life is far better on my iPhone.  I use my iPhone as my main handset and use it constantly.  I use the GS2 for work and use it less often but I have to charge it every two days minimum.  My iPhone gets charged every 3 or 4 days and whilst I might connect to my PC to sync my calendars etc, it is never connected for that long.  I have pre-ordered the iPhone 4S and whilst I would have preferred an iPhone 5, I’m happy with the increased speed, upgraded camera and extra memory offered on the iPhone 4S.

Mate! I dont know in which world you are living in! I have the stupidiot Iphone 4 and I have to say that I consumes battery a lot faster than even Iphone 3gs. Noways, I can believe that you dont need to charge your Iphone uptill 3 or 4 days…even if it is your primary phone….naah …..

  7. standby time, 710 hours on 2G on the Samsung S2?! where do they get these figures. my S2 battery drops approx 22% after 8 hours on standby on 2G, using JuiceDefender, phone sitting there idle, doing nothing. my iPhone 4 battery is easily double that of the S2, and the new 4S will be better again.

  8. Trickydickie says:

To those having issues with battery life on their SGS2, the problem is down to badly written Apps.  This is why Apple have such control over Apps for the iphone.

I removed a load of Apps from my SGS2 and it will now last for days on Standby.

All this Iphone love is misplaced. MY galaxy s2 blows any iphone out of the water in almost every single way. Iphone screen is AWFUL and is covered in over sized child like icons that look rediculous and the contrast on the display is awful. Sorry but Apple are on the way out.. sinking ship.

But will the samsung S2 prove to be more reliable than the iphone? I question if any smart phone company has a better reputation than Apple. Samsung has created a possible challenger to the iphone in terms of gadgets but can it go the long haul without problems? Probably not!! Samsung puts out a new every few months like a never ending assembly line, only caring about numbers and not quality.Apple takes it’s time before rolling out a new product

first off I’m not a samsung fan…just want to let u know that samsung has a lot of products and probably a lot of ideas as well. Unlike APPLE, they can only produce one product, so they have to take their time in making them.

I just went through the 4s vs S2 debate before buying what I consider to be the best phone on the market. The 4S has two antennas thus making drop calls a non issue. The 4S has far better battery life than the S2.All you need do is check out the various forums and read how many S2 owners are complaining about the short battery life of their new samsung phone. I’m not a slave to any phone company but I do give credit when deserved. The S2 is a good phone just not the best phone. The S2 beats the iphone 4S for flexibility of customization use,and its very gadgetdy. The iphone 4S beats the S2 for best reliability, quality of materials, best camera, best phone for playing music(music sound so much better on an iphone 4S compared to a samsung S2),best trade in value(my 3gs trade in value was $100 vs a equal samsung $35),fastest internet speed, best voice command, best sounding speaker for phone calls, best long and short term reliability, best company that stands behind their product even after 12 months(apple has been known to repair for free, out of warrantee items),best ease of use.The conclusion is,the reason why Apple feels like a luxury item is because it is one.Samsung does not have a great reputation for build quality.Do your own research like I did mine, and see for your self.My iphone 4S is amazingly fun, fast and it makes my life easier!

Earler tonight I needed to type a few notes in my note’s section as a reminder.I use my voice command to do the notation and siri performed flawlessly, taking down every number and word as spoken, and I had to push only one button. I have tried the voice command on the samsung S2.It does not impress nearly as well and you must push 4 times as many buttons to getonly less than the desired effect.

S2 is really reliable. period. It doesn’t mean that apple has a good reputation though. They may see apple as there model. Companies change too to compete with apple.
