Windows Phone Devices With Dual Core and LTE On The Horizon

As the Windows Phone faithful are no doubt aware, current Windows Phone smartphones come with a single core processor and do not offer 4G LTE connectivity; however apparently that may change at some point in the future according to Microsoft’s smartphone boss.

According to an article over on Slash Gear by way of AllThingsD, Microsoft chief Andy Lees has said that Microsoft hopes to emerge as “a solid No 3 platform and a viable alternative to Apple and Android,” and also confirmed that dual core 4G LTE Windows Phone devices are coming.

Lees states that the “current crop” of Windows Phones should “hold up well” even against dual core Android devices, and said, “They’re all single core, but I suspect that they will be faster in usage than any dual-core phone that you put against it, and that’s the point.”

Dual core chips are now quite common in Android smartphones while Apple’s new iPhone 4S sports a multi core chip the A5, but as yet Microsoft is still playing the catch up game in this area.

When it comes to 4G LTE with Windows Phone, Lees says, “The first LTE phones were big and big (users) of the battery, and I think it’s possible to do it in a way that is far more efficient, and that’s what we will be doing.”

Although Lees has said that Windows Phone customers can expect LTE models, he didn’t say whether the first LTE enabled Windows Phone would surface this year or sometime next year.

Furthermore according to Lees, although there was a fairly long gap between the initial release of Windows Phone and the Mango update, the software momentum should be faster from now on, and Microsoft is currently working on their next major release with a possible small update in-between.

So there you go, apparently single core Windows Phones can hold their own against Android dual core smartphones, although I would bet the Android faithful and Android makers would say otherwise.
