Nokia N9 PR1.2, your comments after update

If you’re the owner of a Nokia N9 then you’ll probably be interested in this next piece of news regarding the PR1.2 update. It seems the update has arrived slightly sooner than expected for some but not it seems for everyone and we’d like to hear about your update experiences.

News that the update to 30.2012.07-1 has become available came to us from My Nokia Blog where images also show the arrival of the update to the handset. Many Nokia enthusiasts will be delighted to receive this update, which has a file size of 283.7MB. However it seems from early feedback that plenty of people are having problems at the moment, either with downloading the update or not having received notification yet.

There are plenty of comments on the Nokia Blog article above reflecting these concerns. Many people are saying that the update is not available to them yet, while others have received notification of the OTA update but are unable to download it and wondering if the servers are overloaded. A few people have successfully downloaded the update but there are one or two comments from people who have done so who say their phones are very slow since receiving the update. However there are also those who’ve downloaded and say everything is running smoothly and the odd comment that battery life seems to have improved.

It could be that if the update was early in some regions it may still be being rolled out to other regions in the next few days so if you haven’t received the update yet then try to be patient a little longer. From looking through the comments most of those who’ve mentioned their location who have successfully received the update so far, seem to be in various parts of Europe including the U.K.

We’d like to hear from Nokia N9 owners out there if you’ve received the Nokia N9 PR1.2 update yet and if so what are your initial thoughts. Did the update all go smoothly for you? Alternatively if you haven’t yet received the update perhaps you could let us know, also giving us your location so that we can see if there’s any pattern that evolves over where the update is available and where it is not?

I’ve got my update using commands in developer mode (apt-get update & apt-get dist-upgrade, as root (devel-su -), via ssh).

Disappointingly, there is NO Skype Video yet – and that’s a bloody  rip-off from Nokia’s part.

I had developer mode enabled (default superuser password is rootme); I have connected via ssh, in a LAN, and executed at prompt:

        $ devel-su –
        Password:

        # apt-get update
        # apt-get dist-upgrade
        # sync
        # reboot

Same command sequence could be executed in the terminal app (no ssh needed, just wireless Internet access).

Got notified by phone about upgrade yesterday. Followed upgrade instructions.
Phone upgraded easily and without issues. Very happy with upgrade. Swipe is faster, program open faster, etc. Well done Nokia

    1. dsan9 says:

Upgrade & setup take a while (more than an hour), should not be interrupted, and so the SIM appears disabled during the process.
After restart there were no mobile connectivity issues.

Takes patience, but I got the update and it’s all up and working again. I can confirm that my SIM was deactivated temporarily during the installation, but don’t worry it came back.

Liking the folders, can finally clean up my screen.

Now need to re-mod my phone. Only noticed that landscape homescreen isn’t activated anymore and the update to maps/drive has probably reset the GPS server I had set to google.

im tryin to update it rite now…wen i did it…it jus took bout 5 mins after da download…and den said update failed…i did it again and my software updater crashed…so restarted it and it says its updatin…but my screen is blank and da led is blinking on da bottom left corner,,,is my N9 dead?? 🙁 i hav no way of repairin it coz my sis got it 4 me from qatar and its not released here in india…please help im reakin out

    1. Rigo says:

I had the same issue. I assume you have customized your software sources in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ In there, you should only have:
      aegis.ssu-keyring-001.list
      osa.list
Then issue two commands as root
      killall pkgmgr
      killall osa
      apt-get clean
      reboot
      issue the command
      osa –discover
from your terminal as normal user
The update should appear and should work now
Note that my update took very long and the device remained for over 10min at 0%. So have it plugged in and in WIFI as it downloads over 280MB. Be patient, don’t interrupt the update. The phone will interrupt itself if the update doesn’t work

updated my device in DE. Everything has been done successfully. Only two problems. I can’t use the folder feature. Every time i move one icon to a folder my screen goes black an the desk is resetet. Second problem is that i can’t see my last icons on the bottom because scrolling stops one or two lines before the end (in portrai mode). In landscape mode (installed app for this) scrolling stops immediately only showing the first 3 lines.

    1. Premefzee says:

hello mate.I’m from india. I updated PR 1.2 on Mar 1. Not able to scrolldown fully, i.e,to the in potrait mode. landscape, same as urs. Not able to access folders in app screen.
Already posted the bug in harmattan bugs. Waiting for reply 🙁

  7. Everyone, it really helps if after each update you receive on this device if you just go ahead and clear your device back to factory.. i know that’s a pain but you know what?  Everytime I do it this way I have 0 issues.. I am loving Pr 1.2, phone is much quicker… animations smoother, less lag, the new features make it much faster to do things and now i’m happy.

  8. Cyril says:

Updated my device in Indonesia via Wifi, everything works fine, no problems. But it takes nearly one hour, for downloading & installation. Folder function works perfetcly, also adding favorite Websites to Homescreen. Update also increase the speed of swipe function and shutdown programs. Even the layout from the keyboard is improved an now is it much easier to write on it.

Got the update in Australia a couple of days ago.  Since then my battery consumption has tripled.  With 3G data off and the only app open being the Battery Use Monitor my active consumption is 130mA and Idle consumption was 150mA.  It has calmed down now to 53mA for both Idle and Active consumption, but that’s still bad.

Hong Kong – love the new updates. Much better battery life. Like that I can now have the phone in English as standard display language, but switch (by swiping) between English and Chinese input. Also like the improvements to the browser and camera, and I like that you can ‘face tag’ in the gallery. The addition of folders in the apps menu is a bit superfluous, to me, but I guess it’s nice to have the added functionality. I really like the improvements to Maps and Drive, and it’s also nice to have music player controls on the lock screen (though I haven’t made use of the ‘custom playlists’ thing or any of the other music player updates. Haven’t made use of the video call support, either, as it seems this still doesn’t ‘just happen’ phone-to-phone but requires a (free) Google app.

All in all, a huge update (takes only a minute or two over fibre), with a lot to offer.

  11. Grendell says:

Nokia, I’d hate to admit it..Is making me smile again. When I bought my N9 back in December, I wasn’t just buying a phone. I was buying the last pure Finnish phone imbued with their distinct philosophy of how a smartphone should be. It was a beautiful flowing form where software and hardware melded together to create something much more than the sum of it’s parts. I loved it! I must’ve spent two whole months gobbling up and dissecting every single scrap of news I could find on the worldwide web..and not just those written in languages I could understand, either.
A few months later, and all the way from another country, I finally cradled this thing in my palms. Nokia’s take on the iphone. A pure philosophy in tangible form. It was magnificent! A moment of light to wash away the darkness of it’s own foretold doom.
Truth be told, it’s a joy to use.It doesn’t have everything the iphone does (been there), but what it has..it flaunts..in style.
Enter PR1.2 and the N9 is all shiny and new all over again. It’s a myriad of small improvements that again..ads up to more than the sum of it’s parts and a whole new level of experience and appreciation.
Life with the N9 is just like Jessica Alba dropping out of the wild blue yonder to spend the night with you…
    Is she perfect?
    Close!
    Will it end?
    You bet!
Do you really care that it will?
    Not one Damn bit!

    No update in the UAE
my friend bought an n9 from another country and he get the up date but the UAE didn’t got it
can you tell us why all the countries got the update except us ??

  13. dsan9 says:

OK, so there is integrated video call after all, under Google Talk, but not Skype.
And, firefox & flashplayer do work acceptably only in full screen mode.
    All three are downloadable apps.

  14. SM says:

Almost perfect now, cannot use old one after this, why buy more expensive and incomplete
(no flash, build in navigation, poor video support, file sync..) IPhone is for stupid ones…

  15. dsan9 says:

I think I have found a bug: a Wi-Fi Skype call to a (regular) phone will not happen while in flight mode, though otherwise using the Wi-Fi internet connection is quite possible (for browsing the Web). And that seems wrong.

  16. gn11 says:

I updated my nokia succesfully, but it doesn’t work smoothly. I cant see the last icons on my menu, i can’t scroll down… it’s really annoying. is there any solution?

  17. João Lopes says:

Portugal – Updated to PR 1.2  since 14/04/2012. I like the new features, GPS gets the signal fast if I have my 3G connection on, otherwise it will take almost 10 minutes. As the beginning everything worked well but now my N9 is getting slow when loading the applications. For example, When I turn my camera on I always get a message warning that the app is not responding and if I want to wait or kill the app… :S
Waiting for the PR 1.3 to at least fix these new bugs!!

  18. Deb says:

I have been updated, i find the phone to be alot slower, and unfortunately now i do not see photos in the gallery at all now. any sugeestions? i have rang and they reset the whole phone but still do not have a gallery display even though the camera does work. I have even downloaded photo enhancer and front camera to see if it could be rectified 🙁
