RedSn0w tethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1 (non-A5 devices)

Many of you will already know that yesterday Apple rolled out the latest iOS operating system, iOS 5.1. You may be surprised to learn that a Redsn0w tethered jailbreak is now already available for iOS 5.1 on non-A5 processor iOS devices.

As we’ve said, this is a tethered jailbreak at present, meaning that every time your non-A5 iPhone, iPad or iPod touch powers down you’ll need to ‘just boot’ it with redsn0w again. However, no doubt an untethered jailbreak will be on the way soon. Remember you cannot use this iOS 5.1 tethered jailbreak on the iPad 2 or iPad 4S as they use the A5 processor. You can however use it on the the original iPad as well as other iPhones and iPod touch’s.

While we can’t advise readers to jailbreak their devices we know that many people simply can’t wait. The latest version of redsn0w (0.9.10b6) was brought to our attention by Redmond Pie, sourced from the iPhone Dev Team. Advice for those who unlock Gevey or Ultrasn0w is to not update to firmware 5.1 and create a a custom .iPSW. You can find out more on that at the Redmond Pie link above. There’s also a caution reminding potential jailbreakers to wait for an untethered jailbreak or downgrade to iOS 5.0.1 or 4x if they don’t think they can cope with having to constantly connect and reboot.

If you still want to use the latest redsn0w then Redmond Pie also lists a full step-by-step set of instructions to guide you through the procedure including all the necessary links along the way so that hopefully you can’t go too far wrong. Following this there are extra notes and also guidance on optional semi-tethered patch. The speed that hackers manage to come up with jailbreaks does seem incredible to us and we want to know if you’ll be using the tethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1? Maybe you already have and can let us know if it all went smoothly?
