New Galaxy Note OTA update rolling out now

Since the Samsung Galaxy Note smartphone launched it has become a big hit and today we have news of a firmware update now rolling out. The update isn’t yet the Android 4.0 ICS upgrade that many are waiting for but based on Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread.

Many of you would no doubt be more pleased if this was the much-awaited 4.0 ICS update. Back in January we told how this was rumored to be coming before the end of the first quarter of this year. A few days ago we told how some owners of the Galaxy S2 phone were now having the ICS update rolled out to them and in that same press release we were informed that the ICS update for the Galaxy Note was to “follow soon,” so rest assured it is on its way even if it doesn’t quite arrive by the end of Q1. However for now we’ll turn our attention back to the over-the-air firmware for the international edition of the Galaxy Note (GT-N7000).

The update is just under 40MB and brings a new cellular radio (XXLB2). Android Central reports that the firmware update seems to have fixed some video editing bugs that arose after an earlier update. For example if in the video editor app and working with clips of a different frame rate those parts recorded at a lower rate “would stutter and introduce artifacts when rendered.” Artifacting sometimes also occurred when certain files were used with the ‘fade’ effect. Neither of these bugs now appear after the update and we’re informed the update hasn’t affected the speed of the Note.

We’d like to know if your international Samsung Galaxy Note has already received this latest firmware update and if so have you notice anything else it brings to the table or other bux fixes? Did the download go smoothly for you and what do you think of it? Meanwhile we’ll continue to listen out for when the ICS rollout is coming to the Galaxy Note and we’ll pass that information on as soon as we hear it.

PLUS it includes a revised keyboard which has numbers and alpha characters on the same display PLUS the keyboard can be minimised for one-handed operation, left or right selectable, PLUS it has a new 3 intensity torch widget, PLUS the stylus input and handwriting recognition is way improved, in particular the calibration of the stylus . . . probably more improvements – I have only had it a few hours . . . .
