Samsung Google Nexus S 4G CDMA Android 4.0.4 with warning

The Android platform continues to be highly fragmented and as we reported earlier Android Ice Cream Sandwich is still only available on a small percentage of handsets. Today we have news of the Samsung Google Nexus 4G CDMA Android 4.0.4 update, but it comes with a warning.

Last week owners of the GSM version of the Nexus S were pleased to be treated to the official Android ICS update with the 4.0.4 version, but as the Android Community are reporting devices such as the CDMA hardware that include the Nexus S 4G along with the Galaxy Nexus and Verizon’s XOOM were left out.

Now though there has been a solution offered for one of those devices, but it does come with a warning as a leaked version of Android 4.0.4 is available for the Nexus S 4G. The ROM comes via Samsung’s Odin desktop flashing program, and to be able to install it you will have to connect your handset to a PC that has the correct drivers installed, and then starting the handset in the Download Mode before flashing it manually.

Doing this though will wipe your phone of all data and that includes anything that may have been backed up via a custom recovery, so proceed at your own risk. Users that use other programs such as ClockworkMod will have to wait until some clever modders create a more universal ZIP ROM or update the current one.

Currently there is no information when Google will get round to rolling out the Android 4.0.4 update for the Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus, and Verizon’s XOOM, but earlier this year the company removed the three devices from its official support lists in the open source Android archives. In doing so they stated the closed source code used in the software made them invalidated.

The company has promised that they would continue to support these devices, but since the move there hasn’t been an official update for them, and some feel that the Nexus developer device program to be a little tarnished especially on the CDMA networks.

As we said earlier the ROM does come with its risks but for some it will be a risk worth taking, but for other users who are not confident in installing such software onto their smartphones it may lead to some harsh lessons.

Will you download the ROM or do you think it is too much of a risk?
