Galaxy Nexus signal issue reported after Android 4.0.4 update

The Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system made its debut last year via the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and since then we have only seen a small number of other devices getting the new software. Last week an official Android 4.0.4 update was released for the handset, and since then a signal issue has been reported on the device.

There has been a number of owners of the GSM version of the Galaxy Nexus reporting problems with their handset after installing the Android 4.0.4 update, and according to a report on Phone Arena.com the handset losses cellular signal when it is left in standby mode for over a couple of minutes.

This basically means that the device will be unable to receive calls or SMS messages, or secure a 3G connection. Users can only restore a signal and reconnect if they bring the device out of standby, and further testing has found that if the minimum clock speed of the processor in the phone is upped to 700MHz, or if users start running an application in the background that loads the processor the problem doesn’t happen.

Some users returned their Galaxy Nexus back to Android 4.0.2 and have reported the problem is not present once the downgrade is completed. It is not currently known what is causing the problem, but it seems not all Galaxy Nexus’s are affected as several owners on the XDA Developers forum have confirmed that they have seen no issues after upgrading to Android 4.0.4.

So it seems the issue is only hitting a certain batch of the handset, and Google has reportedly been made aware of the problem so hopefully a fix will be pushed out pretty soon. If you have a GSM version of the Galaxy Nexus let us know if you have issues after updating to Android 4.0.4.

My wife and I both got Galaxy Nexus phones on the same day. We got the OTA firmware update on the same day. Both on Vodafone, though the phones weren’t supplied by Vodafone.

My phone loses signal frequently just as described, hers does not.

Waking my phone up doesn’t help either, I have to reboot it. All sine the update, it was fine before that.
