In recent weeks we have seen a couple of Android smartphones finally treated to the latest Android operating system, which have included the likes of the Nexus S 4G and the Galaxy S II. Today we have news of some older Android handsets in the shape of the HTC Desire HD and the Desire S that have had Android ICS 4.0 ported to them.

A xda developers member going under the name of ‘proxuser’ has been busy getting an Android Ice Cream Sandwich port onto the Desire S and Desire HD, and according to GSM Arena the ROM that he has managed to get onto the devices is the HTC One V ROM that was first leaked a few weeks ago.

You can see why this version of Android ICS was used as there are a few hardware similarities between the three handsets, so the HTC One V ROM was used to get ICS unofficially to the Desire handsets. The custom ROM that proxuser has called Primo-S has been around for a few weeks now, but it has been constantly tweaking and updating the software to get to the stage now where it can be used on a daily basis daily.

Currently there are a few things that are not working yet such as the Wi-Fi hotspot, USB tethering, and the camera but these should be fixed soon. If you own one of these handsets and are looking to breathe some new life into them this unofficial ROM may be perfect for you.

It has to be remembered though that all the usual risks with installing custom ROMs still apply, and if you don’t want to go through all the trouble and risks you will just have to wait until the official Android ICS update is available from HTC. The company has already listed both devices in their Android 4.0 roadmap but have so far unfortunately not given any idea when they will be available.
