How to unlock jailbreak iPhones on iOS 5, includes SAM

Great news today for those with jailbroken iPhones as a new unlock method has been made available and the technique has been verified as working. This will mean that you won’t have to wait for AT&T to unlock your iPhone and will be able to use it on any GSM network. The method involves the SAM (Subscriber Artificial Module) package.

The unlock method comes from Chinese hacker Loktar_Sun using Sam Bingner’s SAM and iPhone Dev Team member Musclenerd has confirmed using the method successfully to unlock an iPhone 4S and run it on T-Mobile’s network. The SAM package is available to download by adding this source, repobingner.com, to Cydia and after you have the package you’ll then need to follow a set of instructions that will help you to unlock your iPhone successfully.

To start with you’ll need to go through the settings menu to find SAM or find the SAMPrefs icon on springboard. Bear in mind you’ll need to have the SIM card that you mean to use in your iPhone. The next step is to “deactivate” your iPhone and this can be done by heading to utilities. After doing this your ActivationState under “More Information” should read “Unactivated.” Following steps include finding your carrier and more and a full set of clear and easy-to-follow instructions can be found at iDownload blog here, who have also managed to successfully use this method.

We reckon this latest unlock using SAM will appeal to a lot of users with jailbroken iPhones, especially with further news. Following on from this unlock news a video has now been made available from the iDownload Blog here for unlocking jailbroken iPhones running iOS 5.0 or later on any baseband. The site tested out the new unlock method several times and managed to come up with a completely reliable method which also enabled the use of switching freely between an AT&T SIM card and a T-Mobile SIM card. Another full set of instructions is available but you may find the 7-minute video at the link even easier to follow.

During the last step when you open iTunes and plug in your device to the computer you might receive a message saying it failed to activate your device. Apparently though when this happens you simply need to click ok and eventually the carrier logo for your new SIM will show. Good news then for those who frequently travel or use another SIM card and we have a feeling many will be finding out how to unlock their iPhones over the next few days.

If you try out the new unlock method using SAM let us know if it all goes smoothly for you or if you encounter any problems? Maybe you’ve already tried out this unlock and could share your thoughts on how it worked by sending your comments to us.
