Untethered iOS 5.1 jailbreak closer following Pod2g revelation

A few days ago we gave you the news that prolific jailbreaker Pod2g had announced that he had found two big vulnerabilities in iOS 5.1, and now it seems the untethered iOS 5.1 jailbreak is drawing closer following another Pod2g revelation.

Pod2g has again taken to Twitter to post an update in his tireless work on finding a jailbreak for iOS 5.1, and now as Redmond Pie are reporting he has revealed that he has managed to jailbreak his iPhone 4 untethered on iOS 5.1.

Towards the end of last year and the beginning of 2012 iOS users were treated to two jailbreaks in the form of Corona that worked on older A4 hardware, and Absinthe that followed on with an untethered offering for the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S.

Unfortunately as soon as Apple pushes out an update especially when it accompanies new hardware, everything is almost wiped clean so the jailbreaking community have to start again working to find holes in the iOS software. Recently Pod2g has been pretty busy and has now revealed the latest development in his work.

Currently Pod2g hasn’t revealed any other information such as screenshots, and just because one device has been jailbroken doesn’t mean the utility is about to be released just yet, but it does sound work is progressing nicely. With the amount of new iPads already sold there will be plenty of owners looking to jailbreak their devices so they can discover the benefits that Cydia can bring to the hardware.

Trouble is Apple may not be that long away from releasing iOS 6, which would mean the jailbreaking community starting work all over again. A recent poll was set up by Pod2g asking users whether hackers should keep their powder dry until iOS 6 was released or continue to work on iOS 5.1, but the majority of those that voted favoured an iOS 5.1 jailbreak.

Do hope an untethered iOS 5.1 jailbreak will be released soon?
