WWDC 2012 iPhone 5 MIA but iCloud refresh instead

We know that many people are hoping to hear details of the Apple iPhone 5 (or new iPhone) at WWDC 2012 in June although we’ve already told how the event is due to focus on operating systems, iOS and OS X. Now it seems even more likely that the iPhone 5 will be missing in action but that there will be an iCloud refresh instead.

Despite the general feeling that WWDC will concentrate on iOS and OS X there are plenty of tech enthusiasts and consumers that were anticipating not only a reveal of the iPhone 5 but also a release shortly afterwards. We’ve often spoken about the two anticipated release timeframes for the next iPhone and also how we felt it was more likely to arrive in the fall rather than the summer and news of other likely reveals at WWDC reinforces this. We now hear that as well as an iCloud refresh, new MacBooks are likely to be unveiled as well.

The upgraded iCloud will feature new photo and video capabilities according to eWeek sourced from a WSJ report. WWDC begins on June 11 and the report tells how it’s unlikely that there will be an iPhone 5 appearance. Instead, the revamped iCloud will be detailed and along with users being able to store images in the cloud and sync them to devices, a new feature of the updated iCloud will enable users to share sets of photos that can be commented on by other iCloud users.

People “familiar with the matter” also told the WSJ that videos would also be able to be synched via iCloud and as we mentioned in our recent iOS 6 beta article there will also be Notes and Reminders features. Other things rumored for WWDC include a reveal of iOS 6, a new Apple TV and new MacBook Pros and Piper Jaffray analysts have also mentioned new iPods and iMacs. What is increasingly unlikely though is that there will be any news on the iPhone 5, so for now we may have to make do with more concept ideas and leaked specs and features.

You can be sure we’ll be bringing you all the news and developments from WWDC, which runs from June 11 to 15. You can see more about the event at this Apple page. We’d like to hear your thoughts on the likely non-appearance of the iPhone 5 at WWDC. Is that what you were mostly hoping to see? Maybe you’re more interested in all the details about iOS 6 which is looking more and more certain to be revealed? Let us know with your comments.

Not surprised that Apple will not be discussing the iPhone 5, they seem to be putting a lot of manpower into refining iCloud, understandably after the MobileMe disaster.  Very excited to hear about iOS6 and Mountain Lion which I imagine should be released shortly after the WWDC conference.

They will show iOS6 though and release a developer preview. That’s what they did with iOS5 (show it off 4 months before next iPhone)

The next iPhone launch needs to be like the first and leave Apples competition in board rooms discussing how its ‘just not possible’.
