iPhone 5 upgrade faces Verizon unlimited data loss

I’m sure by now most are quite aware that the Big Red is changing their plans when it comes to their unlimited data offering this summer, a change that when it comes down to it basically means there will be no more unlimited data plans for those Verizon customers that upgrade to a subsidised handset or if you are a new Verizon customer.

We previously covered Verizon change to their unlimited data plan, where Fran Shammo, the CFO of Verizon Communications stated that grandfathered customers would leave the 3G unlimited data plan in favour of 4G LTE, and as such would be required to purchase a Verizon data share plan.

However, according to the guys over at iPhone Rumors, it appears that the Big Red ditching their unlimited data plan just might cause some iPhone owners to not upgrade to the iPhone 5.

According to the guys, the feedback on the matter they have been getting from their readers, some have outright stated that losing their unlimited data plan will stop them from upgrading to the next iPhone, whilst others have said things along the lines of, so much for getting a new phone.

Thus it would appear that Verizon customers are not too happy about losing the unlimited data plan option, especially when it comes to the iPhone.

So with this in mind, we’d like to ask our readers who are with Verizon and own the iPhone, if Verizon dropping the unlimited data plan will cause an issue for you when it comes to upgrading to the new iPhone?

I really want the iphone5, but if Verizon is going to void my (grandfathered in) unlimited data then no~I will NOT upgrade to a new phone and be punished for it.  Especially when Verizon has unlimited data plans on their prepay android phones…4GLTE is not even available where I live nor will it be for at least another 3 years…My iphone4 is the only internet I have available where I live…..and yes~I’m in the sticks lol

Been with Verizon 7 years. Seems like the bigger the company gets the less it cares about its customers. How can you have a smartphone but not an unlimited data plan. Honestly does that make sense. Financially this makes allot of sense. But its like buying a TV without an plug. These phones were designed around the internet. This is a fine example of corporate greed. If I designed a smartphone I be so pissed to see how companies like Verizon are setting these tools back from their full potential.

Especially with the economy being the way that it is. Verizon has just become to big for its own good. Caring is not part of Verizon business growth. Wake up Verizon smart phones and unlimited data plans are a necessary pair. Find another way to maintain your unlimited plans.

      1. Frustrated says:

Yes, they do void the grandfathered. I just tried to pre-order the IPhone 5. I have the unlimited with a 4S and they were telling me my plan is no longer available and I would have to go tiered or pay full price for the phone.

  2. Sean says:

There is no way I will be Nickel and Dimed by this phone company. 3G is just fine. Apple is going to miss out on a lot of phone sales this time around.

  3. Moitien says:

It is amazing to me that loyalty to a company is punished.  Not only will I not upgrade my one line, I won’t upgrade my 5 lines and perhaps I will take them somewhere else.

  4. pizza says:

I called Verizon and asked them about this. I don’t know where the authors of these articles are getting their info, but I was explicitly instructed that people WILL be grandfathered in if they upgrade to a 4G phone. They said on the customer service side that they’ve been getting those questions a lot and all unlimited data plans will continue to be unlimited.

Can we get a fact check please?

      1. johndoe says:

my wiife upgraded to 4g last month and she still has her unlimited it just updated to unlimited 4g… so obviously whoever told you that was full of crap… and also when she got unlimited data it wasnt even on my plan it was with her parents and when we switched her to my plan she got to keep it so whoever is spreading these lies about losing unlimited is obviously devout sprint followers and have no clue what they are talking about

    1. Frustrated says:

I tried to pre-order the IPhone 5, I currently have the 4S with the unlimited plan. I’ve been a Verizon customer for over 10 years. When I tried to pre-order, it took away my unlimited data plan and said I would have to choose a tiered plan as mine is no longer available. This only happens if you choose to get the discounted price on the phone. If you pay full price as mentioned above, you do not lose your unlimited plan. I cancelled the order and will not go through Verizon to get the IPhone 5 and lose my unlimited data plan.

  5. Crystal says:

If verizon is going to void my grandfathered contract and remove my unlimited features if I were to upgrade to an iphone 5 then I can assure you that I host no intentions of remaining a Verizon customer. I have been a loyal customer to Verizon for one too many years for them to just start being disloyal to its customers. On top of that, I pay too much damn money for my Verizon 3g service simply because of my excellent coverage no matter where I go in the nation for the most part. I use my iphone far too much to NOT have an unlimited plan and I travel too frequently to rely on faulty 4g networks. I checked the 4g map for Verizon and in my own homestate of New Jersey I would have to drive almost an hour away to access the network?! That is beyond ridiculous! I am constantly traveling from New Jersey to Delaware to the south east to Texas to New England etc and a majority of the places I go to do not have 4g service! So now my question is to you, Verizon, what is the point?! Do you enjoy being disloyal to your customers?! Do you enjoy the definite possibility of losing vast amounts of customers due to this?! You do realize that this is JUST the thing that the Sprint network has been waiting for?! They already offer unlimited iphone plans for dirt cheap prices (in comparison to what Verizon offers) and I am sure that Sprint will welcome these new customers with open arms. I cannot for sure say that I will be a Sprint converter, because I have never been much of a fan of their customer service and faulty coverage areas but Sprint is coming along quite nicely, to be perfectly honest. So if this is the case, Verizon, I will either be resuming my GRAnDFATHERED

  6. Youngzb says:

I was planning on getting an iPhone upgrade in the end of the fall, and if theres no unlimited data plan than it won’t happen. otherwise all of the awesome feature end up being expensive to even use.

  7. C_smith0412 says:

The hell with the new iPhone if I lose my unlimited plan. That’s bull crap I’ve been with Verizon for years and that’s how they treat me I might even switch carriers.

  8. JAPPLE1 says:

So much for loyalty 12 years, they keep changing the rules just like the cable companies.  I guess I have to go shopping for the best deal again. I wonder if Apple could help us with this issue? Plus, I’m tired of the gas and cable increase. 🙁

  9. Crystal says:

I just called Verizon and they said that they have not yet been given a definite answer on if this is true but that if they do do away with it then those affected will be notified in advance so that the proper adjustments can be made. Umm I like definite answers when my money is involved… Verizon please do better

  10. Not a Smart Move! says:

I will go with another carrier if Verizon drops the Unlimited Data plan.  I have an iPhone 4 now and would like to upgrade but I will do it with someone else.
    Not a good decision!

  11. SHAPSMAN says:

I was thinking of switching to Verizon when the iPhone 5 comes out.  If they do not offer an unlimited data plan, I will likely not be signing up with Verizon.

  12. Scottdowning says:

Will now upgrade earlier than planned to the iPhone 4s rather than waiting for the iPhone5. Want to make sure I have my unlimited data as long as possible.

  13. Elijamission says:

i was exited about the iPhone 5 upgrade specially with an unlimited data plan, but it’s looking that i will be switching carriers 🙁

  14. Guest says:

I have been a Verizon customer for over 10 years. If Verizon decides to eliminate their unlimited data plan, then I may have to think about finding a new carrier. I have an IPhone 4 and would like to upgrade to 5, but only if I can keep my plan. Verizon will lose a great deal of loyal customers if they decide to move forward with this new plan.

  15. ArchDJG says:

  16. Jeff Hortian says:

I need at least 4 gigs of data for the same 30 dollars a month. If they don’t have a special offer or won’t work with me I don’t think I will rush into upgrading!

  17. Osielgomez says:

I will look for any other provider who offers unlimited with the iPhone 5. If none do well I will not be upgrading. One provider will see how many people will not upgrade and will want to tap into that market by offering unlimited. Just like sprint is doing now. I’ve been a loyal Verizon customer for more than 12 years but I have encouraged my friends to buy there iPhones through sprint to get the unlimited data.

  18. I have iPhone 4 unlimited on Verizon. Not sure which way I’m going to go now, but I do want to say that we DON’T HAVE to upgrade every two years. I brought my own iPhone.  Don’t like being on contract. My phone works just fine and may continue to work for years to come.  No need for me to make a switch when new iPhone 5 comes out.

Would I like a iPhone 5? Yes. Would I like 4g speed? Yes.  But my unlimited 3g iPhone 4 is working just fine for me now.  If Verizon caps me for upgrading and locking into a 2 year agreement, I’ll just stick with what I have. And shop around

  19. Jilo says:

    Corporate Greed at it’s Finest.
Did you know text messages were an unpublicized built in feature of every phone 12 years ago that was absolutely free? They have found ways to slave us into their nickel diming scheme.

  20. i_talk says:

Many people would rather SWITCH CARRIERS then give up unlimited data on an iPhone. If they want Sprint to rise above them, so be it. AT&T is evil, T-Mobile is horrible and Verizon is now getting greedy I hate to admit it.

  21. rnd says:

Version has the worse customer relations in the industry!  My wife and I have been with them for 12 years.  Getting rid of our unlimited data plan and its time to move on to AT&T or Sprint.  Maybe they care a little more about their loyal customers.

    1. Kearndog1 says:

Be careful what you ask for with AT&T or Sprint. They have horrible service, as in no-reason dropped calls. I’m leaving AT&T after 10 years b/c of it.

  22. Cody says:

I have been with Verizon for 14 years and if I have to give up unlimited data plan I will go to another carrier.  Why do companies always have to change what works.

  23. ArchDJG says:

Verizon bill currently $125 per phone 1500 minutes
Car bill $250 per month civic

Do I sell my car to keep my iPhone

Without unlimited my cell phone will be a car payment.

I guess I can’t listen to pandora in the car
Or watch netflixs whenever I want to
    Hulu same thing

Download updates are you crazy I only get a max 10 gigs a month

    Choose wisely

iPhone + unlimited = happy customer

  24. Ncevans07 says:

That is absolutely ridiculous to take unlimited data away from current customers!  Guess we’ll be finding a new phone company!

  25. Bret says:

It will definitely keep me from moving to the new iPhone.  Verizon is starting to sound like the airlines…find new ways to squeeze more money out of it’s customers so that their bottom line will be better.  Never mind about customers who have been loyal for many years…even when that meant doing without the iPhone.

  26. Tnaskyy89 says:

OMG Stop complaining! Verizon is getting screwed by all the people who root or jailbreak there phones and use data on laptops and tablets. so if they kept the unlimited plan with 4g they would lose more money. atnt does the same thing! everyone will buy the iphone regardless of unlimited because they will supply the iphone and we all demand it so stop crying…those verizon customers that oh ive been loyal for years give me a break, if you had your own ompny you would do the same.

    1. Replying to Tnaskyy89 says:

Yeah right!!!  Verizon is losing money……give me a break….next you will be telling me that the tooth fairy is real!!

    2. Caddant says:

Whose Penis are you sucking over there at Verizon. Wow. When your a customer with a company for a long time, you expect not to be treated this way. Corporate greed needs to stop. Are they hard up for cash, they need to screw current customers this way. There could not possibly be that many customers with unlimited, that this will make a difference in their pockets. who the hell are you sticking up for Verizon?

    3. Nubisicon says:

If you pay top dollar to own a phone it should be yours to do what the hell you want with it just like a computer! Granted some people take more advantage of the perks of a rooted or jailbroken phone than others but trust me, with Verizon’s customer base and cost for plans, they are not hurting in the financial world. Try looking at some statistics before you make stupid statements about Verizon being screwed. If you run a service based company you should go out of your way to provide exceptional service and to keep your customer base happy. I own my own company and trust me that attitude keeps it rolling! Not giving my customers something and then ripping it away to make more money.
Let the grandfathered people keep what they have. Verizon is getting plenty of new customers to make the extra money they want!!

    4. Donod2 says:

My phone is not rooted nor shared with a PC or tablet. If I were to loose the unlimited option, I would stay with what I have, unless you would like to pay my bill. When it costs more for a data plan than your house and you can do less with it due to screen size, and if you have 3 smartphones , it adds up quickly.

    5. Seth says:

I have unlimited 4g and unlimited hotspot on my phone that I already paying for how is that ripping them off? If anything they are ripping me off now by stealing away my plan after I am stuck in Verizon with my IPad 3 and 2 phones that can now be upgraded but can’t without losing my unlimited now.

  27. Adambom Nettles says:

I have the iPhone 4 and bought in July on 2011. I had the Droid by Motorolla before that with the unlimited data feature because it was required. When I upgraded to my iPhone, I got to keep the unlimited data feature. If the new changes mean that If I upgrade the the next iPhone when it comes out I loose my unlimited data, I will happily keep my 4 and keep my unlimited data.

  28. Gdimachine3 says:

I have unlimited 3g on a iphone 4 now. What happens if I PAY FULL PRICE for a iphone 5 when it comes out, will I get 4g unlimited?

    1. Wilbert55163 says:

other sources say that you will be able to keep your unlimited data ONLY IF you pay FULL price for the phone. I also have an iphone 4 with unlimited data on verizon and I was planning to pay the full price for the 5 anyways. But it will probably be around $650 just for the 16 gb version.

  29. Caddant says:

No I will not. currenttly have the iPhone 4. Been with Verizon for more than 12 years. this is total horse sh!^. Hell I may even go to another carrier out of spite. How dare they treat customers like this.

  30. Gina_chandler says:

I will not upgrade if I lose unlimited data. I use my phone for work and I am constantly online or checking emails. If I had to pay I would switch to a different provider. I have been with Verizon for 5 years, but I won’t pay more because they become money hungry.

  31. Mandee Gibson says:

I would not upgrade for losing my data weather it is to a new 4g anything and for that fact I did upgrade not that long ago and have the thunderbolt and they never once said anything to me about losing my data plan that I was grandfathered into and as far as I know I have not I would be livid if this happened and I guess my phone better treat me good because I now know I am staying wth this one

  32. Kearndog1 says:

Verizon has new plans coming out on 6/28 that will probably be cheaper in the long run. Unlimited calls and texts with 4GB to share is $150/month for two phones. That’s about $50 cheaper than AT&T and also includes mobile hot spot feature for free (another $20 at AT&T). You can use some of that savings to add more GB – I think it’s $10 for each additional 2GB.

I think you have to look at what’s most important on your phone. To me it’s a phone that happens to be a computer, so if the service is crap (like AT&T on iPhone), then it’s not worth it even if it’s free. AT&T charges Disneyland prices and sends you to the public park to play on a broken swingset.

  33. Jad552 says:

I upgraded my wife’s phone to the Motorola razr which is 4G and I asked them about losing unlimited data, they told me it didn’t matter if it was 3G or 4G we would still get unlimited data

  34. If I lose my unlimited, I would not get the iPhone 5. If there is a competitor offering a better plan and not shafting their current customers, goodbye Verizon. What a douche move, Verizon.

  35. Relentless369 says:

I’m on Verizon 4G with the Thunderbolt grandfathered in with unlimited data, change my plan if I upgrade to iPhone 5 you’ve lost a long time customer.

  36. Wilbert55163 says:

I dont know if this is true but i heard that if you were to pay full price for a new phone after verizon releases their shared everything plan, you would be able to keep your unlimited data.

    1. Toni0508 says:

You are exactly right. I am a sales consultant for Verizon and here is what we have been told…Customers who are new to Verizon or who are upgrading from basic to smart phones will not have the option of unlimited data. Customers who already have Verizon (say iphone 4) and have the grandfathered in unlimited data, have a few options. Option #1- Upgrade your device and lose unlimited data, but you pay a lot less for the device Option #2 – Pay full retail price for the device and have it activated on your account and you will keep the grandfathered unlimited data Option #3 – Purchase a device anywhere you choose (online, friend, etc) and have it activated on your account and you will keep the grandfathered data.

  37. Gawgee says:

No upgrade for me. Been with Verizon 4ever…but if they choose to drop unlimited data if I upgrade…I will either keep what I got or look for another carrier for the iphone5.NOR will I pay full price for a cell phone that will be yesterday’s news as soon as you get locked into a 2 year contract. Dumb move on Verizon’s part.

  38. Nubisicon says:

I’ve been with Verizon for a very long time. I’m currently on a Droid X and planned to snag an iPhone 5 when they come out. If Verizon is killing my grandfathered unlimited data plan I definitely won’t be getting the iPhone 5 and probably will not stick around with Verizon much longer!!

  39. Natalie17 says:

Ive currently lost my unlimited data when I got a new phone. But with the iPhone u can connect to wireless Internet just about anywhere u go. It’s not that big of a deal.. I havent gone over on my data. Nd I am always on fb instagram google.

  40. Chryl Randall says:

Well I have an unlimited plan and I am a customer of Verizon one day….I hate to say it people – I was with Sprint 14 years….they give unlimited data because it unreliable. It you can use unlimited data when you are getting .01 Mbps….have at it.

I am so happy to have the network to support my iphone  that my Mercedes is now on a freeway versus a dirt road.

  41. Drew says:

I’m on a Droid and had every intention of changing to the iPhone because I’m a mac user and want the compatibility.  I will forgo that compatibility and stick with the phone I have because I’m not going to change phones if it means loosing unlimited data.  I do a ton of work from my phone.  I have always loved and been loyal to Verizon; this is the first time I have been disappointed in them.

  42. R Davis says:

On June 24 th I upgraded to an htc resound. I decided to exchange it and phoned the Verizon store on June 28th and the rep said I could exchange without loosing my unlimited data. I tried to exchange at the store and was told I would loose unlimited. I’m going to call our company Verizon rep today and if I can’t get this resolved I’m returning the phone, ending my contract, and leaving Verizon.

  43. TX Sales Rep says:

I like so many others below will most likely walk away from Verizon if my unlimited data is no longer available. I have been a Verizon customer for over 10 years and work in sales so my monthly usage varies widely from month to month. Verizon definitely has the best coverage where I live but if being a long term loyal customer doesn’t mean anything to Verizon than I will be moving to AT&T.

  44. Stl3359 says:

No. We have 5 iPhones on Verizon and all phones combined, we have never exceeded 5 GB of data any month since March 2011, so we’ll just get on the 10GB data plan, which includes unlimited minutes AND texting. The worst case is $10 per GB over 10 GB. It’s a good deal. Now, if the next Verizon iPhone is not a 4G phone, that will be a problem.

  45. Chillen126 says:

Im def leaving verizon when its time for a new phone. This was a horrible move by them and sprint is about to have more customers then they can handle. I will enjoy watching verizon stock price plummet.

  46. Donod2 says:

I will not upgrade. I used 13G last month. Some months it is 2 some 5 it just depends and I do not want the share plan for myself. For the wife and kids it could be good, but it is still expensive, may as well keep their own plan.

  47. Klmills32 says:

Boooo Verizon! I have an iPhone 4 and was anxiously awaiting the arrival go the 5. I have thus far been grandfathered in on the unlimited data plan. I now may reconsider upgrading due to loosing unlimited data. WAKE UP VERIZON!

  48. maui808 says:

I may be switching over to Sprint if Verizon doesnʻt offer the unlimited plan with the new iPhone5.  Been a customer with them for years and this is how they gonna treat their loyal customers?  What a bummer.  Whereʻs the aloha?

  49. Ddrake256 says:

I have an iPhone 4 with unlimited data and would like to have the iPhone 5 and I have an upgrade in December but I probably will not go with the 5 if they take away my unlimited data. That’s ridiculous to do that with that phone when that’s the one feature that helped me to go with Verizon take that away and they’re no better than anyone else.

  50. Toni0508 says:

I am a sales consultant for Verizon and here is what we have been told…Customers who are new to Verizon or who are upgrading from basic to smart phones will not have the option of unlimited data. As far as the amount of data a person uses, the average smartphone user uses 1-2 GB per month. Some however, use more. In that case, if you have a 2GB plan and go over, Verizon will charge you $15/GB you go over. However, if you monitor your usage and see you may go over, you can call in to customer service and add an additional 2GB for $10 (obviously choice 2 is cheaper). As someone below mentioned, iphones are wi-fi capable devices. If your phone is running on a wi-fi network, you DO NOT use any of your data because you are actually using internet from a wi-fi network. I myself have the iphone 4 and I am CONSTANTLY on my phone doing email, facebook, youtube, PANDORA etc. Before I had an iphone, I was using a TON of data, but once I upgraded to a device that was wi-fi capable, I barely touch 1GB!
    Hope this helps some.

    1. Vujade911 says:

I am also a rep for Verizon Wireless and there are two additional options that you did not mention that will allow customers to keep their unlimited data. Option #4 Upgrade a different line (Do not do an alternate upgrade) on the account to get the new iPhone, it will add a 2GB plan to that line that you did the upgrade on, then do an ESN change to the line that has unlimited data. Option #5 Add a new line of service for the iPhone, then do an ESN change to the existing line with unlimited data.

      1. kels says:

I hAve to get Verizon because I moved to big bear. My boyfriend has the the unlimited data. I howeverwon’t. But of he adds a line. What is the want change so I can get I limited data

          1. stephanie says:

no it isn’t, verizon is BS. i’m about to cancel it. I have unlimited and my bf doesnt, i tried to add him to my plan and they won’t allow it. He would have to get a separate data plan and we just share texts/calls.

          2. solomonshv says:

are you being serious right now? are you that clue less? that’s how it’s always has been, for more than a decade. how is this news? you can’t share a data plan that wasn’t meant to be shared to begin with, and that’s the end of it. no carrier in the world would allow you to share an unlimited plan.

i have had a family plan on AT&T years ago. 4 phones each with its own $30 data plan and limited shared minutes/texts. in 2008 we switched to verizon. SAME THING! each line with its own data plan at $30 a pop, but shared minutes and texts.

      2. There is something I don’t understand about Option #5. If I add a new phone line to my current plan and get the iphone 5, do an ESN change to my original line, and then cancel the line I just made, won’t Verizon ask me for the different from the subsidized phone?

  51. Hershey1130 says:

I will most likely terminate my contract with Verizon for the simple reason that if I upgrade my plan to get the iPhone 5 I will lose my unlimited data plan.

  52. brut84 says:

i am not renewing my contract with
Verizon in Dec. and will go to SPRINT or AT&T instead and get
the Iphone 5 that way. Verizon is ridiculous and over priced as it is.. But to
find another way to squeeze more money out of its customers is not something I
want to support. I have been with Verizon for over 7 years now and have had
many ups and downs and love the fact that some of their reps have actually
posted on here because guaranteed from my own prior experience… every time
you call Verizon you get a different answer for the question or problem you are
having…good luck to the suckers that stay with Verizon as I wave my middle
finger at them 🙂 Good day

    1. Ted says:

Good luck with Sprint if you decide to change to them.I have had Sprint 11 years and now their long promised 4g for my Evo after two years never materialized, and their coverage in NW Indiana is iffy at best. They have lost their competitive edge and are still trying to develop their LTE 4g which Verizon already has? Promises when you buy an expensive Android from Sprint do not live up to their hype. Sprint will also be cutting out unlimited data, caveat emptor.

  53. SoonXVerizonCustomer says:

I have been with Verizon for at least 10+ years. I would like to upgrade to a smartphone as I am still on a basic. But with it being so close to the iPhone 5, I have held out for this new phone. If I can’t get unlimited data after waiting all this time… I’ll find a provider (Sprint/AT&T) who will offer not a long, loyal customer but a brand new customer unlimited data. Verizon seems to have gotten quite greedy and I have started having many issues with them over the last year or so with random charges on my bill and other bull. Sounds like its time for a switch of providers.

  54. Ted says:

How many people with unlimited plans actually exceed 5gig a month in monthly data. If the only reason you buy a phone is to keep using it as a computer and not just a random tool, then use you home computer or laptop. In my opinion downloaded music and video streaming is best left to the tools that handle it best. A phone is a phone with the extra amenities, use it accordingly and don’t text and drive or use the phone for work best done on a computer or Ipad.

  55. Marty says:

I wish that I could get a iphone 5 without having data. Of course, when I’m in an area with free wifi I want to be able to use it, but I’m a teen and it’s hard to pay for a data plan. A HUGE NEGATIVE for me. As for those who want data, if I have to pay $30 a month I want to be able to get a lot of use out of it!!! Hopefully verizon will offer a data free plan!?

  56. Harleyman_52 says:

If it comes down to loosing my plan then I will have to not upgrade to the Iphone 5 But stick with my 4 and hope that they see the light and rethink the Idea

I’ve been a loyal Verizon Customer for years.  I’m a small biz owner and my partners and I will be switching to Sprint come iPhone 5 time.  Just sad when a I asked Verizon corporate directly, “are you getting rid of the unlimited data plans”, and their response was “we’re not AT&T”.  Yep your right, your not AT&T… Your worse!

  58. Zendetti says:

Sprint here I come ! Wake up money hunger verzion !
I’m paying u over 200 a month for 2 iPhone 4 phones with unlimited … I guess sprint wants my money instead …,

  59. aperron420 says:

This is sooo very upsetting to me! I have been a VZW customer for 10+ years, grandfathered into the unlimited data. I am also am an iPhone 4S owner who will not settle for anything other… If this is the case, it is extremely displeasing to me and may have no other choice but to choose a new wireless carrier!

  60. Stcardsfan25 says:

I have been a VZW customer for 5 years now and I have never once thought of switching providers. They have always treated me well and I have always been satisfied with my services. Sad to say but if Verizon decides to force me onto a tiered data package; they will be saying goodbye. If I am able to keep my grandfathered unlimited data I will purchase iPhone 5 through other means than an upgrade and new contract requiring tiered data.

  61. Mainline girl says:

I was not told when I upgraded that I would lose the free data plan. In one week I’ve already gone thru my “allowance”  I would have changed carriers if I had any idea this would happen!!

  62. LonelyIsland says:

If Verizon does not have an unlimited data plan for use with the iPhone 5 with presumably 4G, I will definitely switch to Sprint. I use around 4-5 GB of data per month, and I have noticed substantial throttling of data (even with my unlimited plan, yes, Verizon throttles its highest data users) above 3.5 GB or so.

  63. does anyone realize that by verizon making us pay full price for a phone in order to keep our grandfathered unlimited data instead of a discounted price or making us switch to there new share plan VOIDS THE NEW EVER TWO PART OF OUR CONTRACTS AND PROVIDES A LOOP HOLE FOR US TO CANCEL OUR CONTRACTS WITH OUT HAVEING TO PAY THE EARLY TERMINATION FEE….. I was told i could upgrade when i got the unlimited data program and recieve a discounted price. By forcing us to pay full price to keep plan this Verizon created a loop hole everyone is overlooking… New every Two is meant to renew contract with same plan unless you choose to change plans and allow a significant discount on phones for doing so…. NOT TO BE TOLD YOU HAVE TO SWITCH PLANS OR PAY FULL PRICE

  65. AntHB says:

F you Verizon. I’m taking my 5 lines and 15 years of loyalty (Yes, I was with GTE Mobilenet before you took over their customer) to someone else when the iPhone 5 comes out.

  66. tim says:

While I’m an Android user and depise Apple Products, I am anticipating the iphone 5 because of the big hit it will have on Verizon. Lets be honest iphone 4/4S will be updated to iOS 6 so the only real differnce between iphone 4S & 5 is 4G LTE & of course a slightly bigger screen. If you really wanted 4G that badly you would have gotten a Galaxy Nexus or S3 before the 28th Cut off date. As for the screen size I’m sure its not worth loosing unlimited data. Verizon will have a nice stock of iphones but will discover no one wants them because they are fine with the 4/4S. If i was an iphone user I would take unlimited 3G over 2GB of 4G anyday.

  67. quetzal88 says:

I have 4 lines and have been with Verizon for over 10 years. My 2 year contracts are up for renewal soon and I will not be renewing with Verizon if upgrading will cause me to lose my unlimited data plan. Already I have begun to look toward other carriers.

  68. Poteddy says:

I don’t get what the problem is. Who uses more than 2Gb/month anyway? Use your wi-fi to download games, etc. and you should be totally fine. I purposely got off the unlimited data plan with AT&T about a year ago to a 2Gb plan and has not gone over once. You people panic for no reason, Verizon is awsome, I will switch over to Verizon this year just for the signal strength alone, they have signal where T-mobile and AT&T are dead.

  69. MikeN says:

1 phone/device user where my Verizon Unlimited costs $70/month. Their new share plan for 2Gb is $100/month. Over 24 months, that’s a $720 difference… about what an unsubsidized iPhone 5 will cost, but get to keep the Unlimited data plan.

  70. Jack says:

This is outrageous. I have a large business plan and have been loyal to Verizon for 15 years. Stopping the unlimited data plan punishes my company for being loyal to Verizon. No customer wants to feel exploited by their cellular network. Its the principle of the matter in the end. I will be leaving Verizon if this goes through.

  71. Bryan says:

I have been with verizon for years i may just get rid of them all together and get a prepaid phone yes i have an iphone now and love it but if there gonna stick it to there customers then we might as well retaliate ourselves

    1. Cthulhu says:

I forgot to add. In the family, we have 2 Phone 4 with Unlimited Data,1 iphone 4S with unlimited data 1 Droid with also unlimited Data, and another iPhone 4 with 2gb ( My dad didn’t upgrade soon enough from a dumbphone). Really dumb move from Verizon, seems like my 5 phones will be going to another carrier, Sprint most likely.

  72. smeech says:

Just finished chatting with a Verizon rep and she confirmed that I would lose my unlimited data plan if I upgrade from the 4s to the 5. I told her I would just stay with my 4s then. Her response was that I should “keep in mind that our phones prices do change”. Not sure what she was suggesting. Is Verizon planning on increasing the price of the iPhone 5 at some point?

  73. DLC says:

I cannot afford to upgrade to the iphone 5 for the unlimited data reason alone. I listen to iHeart radio all day at work on my 3g network because my company does not allow streaming on their network, so for that reason alone, I will keep my iPhone 4, and continue to enjoy iHeart radio at work all day! I avg about 5GB a month. Although I wish I had Siri, the iHeart/Pandora streaming reason trumps that in my case, so I’ll just stick with my iPhone 4 for now…

  74. johndoe says:

this isnt true my wife just upgraded to a 4g phone last month and she still has her unlimited data…. she even got to keep it when we switched her from her parents plan to mine…

  75. jayvictoria says:

I am stickin with my iphone 4, until verizon changes or gets some better plans. I have been eligable for an upgrade for awhile but refuse to lose my unlimited data plan. When the time comes to get a new phone I will just have to stick with 3G phones, but yes apple is lossing money with verizon now, I know a lot of people that are doing the same as me.

  76. Gus says:

I am overdue for a new smart phone (4 years) and was going to switch to iphone5 and keep my unlimited data I do use with my blackberry. I will not upgrade until verizon changes the policy to grandfather in – I have been with verizon since it was airtouch (circa 1996). So much for customer loyalty.Good thing you can port numbers if I choose to.

  77. Josh says:

Verizon just can’t seem to make enough money.

No, I am not upgrading to the iPhone 5 because of this new policy. I have been with Verizon since before they bought Alltel, I have had unlimited data for the entire time and I will not give in to Verizon’s greedy policy.

I’d be ok with upgrading from my 4 to the 4s…but it’s the same deal across the board.

  78. Just Rick says:

Well I was just in the process to upgrade to iphone 5 right now and found came to the message of losing my unlimited data. I just backspaced and cancelled the order!!! I found this thread and like all of you I am very unhappy!

    SPRINT HERE I COME!!!

  79. abydiel says:

i will definitely not upgrade to an iphone 5 if i lose my unlimited plan. i travel a lot and am typically not on wifi like most people. i use my phone for work and play and losing unlimited data would basically force me to move to sprint so i can actually use my phone for everything i need it for.
